New SMP beta client available

The new SMP beta client is available for download:

Folding@home - Download

If you continue to use the old client, it will not startup since it has expired. The application just shuts down with no messages coming up to say that it has expired.

Re: New SMP beta client available

I just successfully installed the latest SMP client successfully on 2 of my machines. Steps that I took:

1. Shutdown the SMP client that is folding the protein.
2. Right-click on my computer, select manage.
3. Expand "Services and Applications".
4. Click on Services.
5. Stop the "MPICH2 Process Manager, Argonne National Lab" service.
6. Execute the new Folding client EXE file.
7. Install it in the same location as the old client folder.
8. Execute the Install.bat file.
9. Setup a user that has a password and administrator rights by inserting the password, then hit enter. Retype the password and hit enter.
10. If you see this twice "MPI is working", you should be all set.
11. Execute on the fah.exe file in the folder that you installed the client to continue folding the current protein.

The new client was able to continue folding the same protein that the old client was folding.

Re: New SMP beta client available

I tried it and I don't think I'll ever be able to use a windows SMP client so long as it's all done with MPI. My DSL has a nasty habit of intermittent drops and any trouble with a network seems to stop folding altogether. I have to stick with SMP folding through a VM.

Well, it's working! The threads are funny though. Under Linux each thread consumed about the same cpu usage - no so under windowsXP (dual Core2 cpu).

Re: New SMP beta client available

While definitely slower than running under Linux, it does work now (even the service install worked). It did bork my machine once last night and caused it to reboot - even though it passes tests with a much higher workload (higher cpu temp, chipset temp, memory temp) It did pickup from where it left off and continue folding the same protein simulation.

Argh! Usually I shutdown SMP FAH b/4 rebooting my computer. Today I forgot to - 58% of a 1760 point WU gone! Just gone, no trace - yay

Re: New SMP beta client available

I really hate the SMP clients, and to be honest, I'm sick of running a VM too. Running two regular console clients (as services) now and I'm done with it. I know I won't get the most points (who cares?!?) or contribute as much as I otherwise could to the science (the real downside), but I'm just sick of the frustration.

Actually, I shouldn't complain too much, my machine in much more responsive than it was running Linux in a VM and I can clock it higher as well.

Re: New SMP beta client available

I would use it if it just weren't for the networking issues with MPI.

Yeah, I reset my router after making a couple of changes and didn't realize that FAH stopped till a couple of hours later

Re: New SMP beta client available

Yeah, ANY change that hits the network causes MPI to crap out and so folding stops. It really sucks. Oh well. I guess it's Unix based software that they've done their best to port over to windows. Understandable that there are issues. I just won't run it anymore.

But I may soon get a PS3 so I'll fold with that too.
