Maico Shark checking in...

Hello fellow members. I'm an old dude from the days of punch cards, Timex Sinclair, and the Commodore Vic-20. I hope to get up to speed with the newest technology and will be reading many of the posts throughout the site. I live in the deep woods of central Pennsylvania in a log cabin with a trout stream outside my door (no kidding). I am currently a magazine editor and also have been employed by Crowdgather for some time as a website administrator. Anyone with ideas or suggestions about our site please reach out to me. I will be working hard to grow our active membership and will be greeting those who take the time to introduce themselves. I hope, through discussions, to get to know many of you... I look forward to that.

Re: Maico Shark checking in...

Welcome, Maico, very glad to have you aboard!

By way of introducing myself, I think my profile pretty much says it all.

Re improvements to the forum, you'll get a pretty good sense of what the long-time members would like to see from this thread, particularly its two or three most recent pages: Where Has Everyone Gone???

Summarizing what I believe are the most wanted improvements:

1. A list on the front page of recent posts. Sanjay's post earlier today indicated that this is already being worked.
2. A login box on the front page. Presently, it only appears on sub-pages.
3. A link on the front page to private messages, and a pop-up indication that new pm's have been received (in both cases, similar to what presently occurs when sub-pages are viewed).

You'll also see some mention in the thread I linked to of putting a link on the front page to an extended list of recent posts, such as for the previous 24 hours. But I think we come sufficiently close to already having that, in the form of the "New Posts" link which is presently on the front page, and which I believe returns all posts from the same day, segregated between those which came before and after the member's most recent visit. I invite others to comment further on this, if they would prefer something different.

Welcome once again!

Best,
-- Al

Re: Maico Shark checking in...

Welcome aboard Maico! Glad to see some help showing up here and I hope you see the good this site has with it's long time membership...

I think the login is one of the most troublesome for our members. I even had a hard time finding a login screen with a fresh install here just yesterday.
I finally had to change skins to see a box for my password. And that was the second screen in...members are having real issues with this.

Again, good to see you and am looking forward to some positive things happening here.

Re: Maico Shark checking in...

Welcome aboard Maico and congratulations!! I think you will find abXzone a very enjoyable place to spend time in.

You will also find that we the members have got a few ideas about sprucing the place up a bit. Just needs someone with the *power* to implement for us.

Welcome Maico!!!

I echo what Al posted----his list are what most members think needs to be done as a beginning to revitalize and stablize the forum.

This is actually one of the most pleasant and knowlegeable tech sites around and I think you will enjoy being here.

We have Democrats and Republicans----liberals and conservatives and an international flavor....

We have old folks and young folks----and in-betweeners----but I have to admit that most of our really active members tend to be from mature stages in life and we could never be labled as a "young" forum....

Folks are polite but speak thie piece freely.

I like the fact that when I ask for help or advice on something----I get EXCELLENT results within hours----not days. I also like the fact that folks are tolerant and practical----and their isn't a lot of childish ranting and raving.

Again----welcome-----and I think you will like it here....

Re: Maico Shark checking in...

Well---I seem to have quoted Al twice

And I'm not being offered an "Edit " button so there is no way to fix it....

Sigh....

TGIF----the way this week has gone----I NEED SOME R & R!!

Re: Maico Shark checking in...

I fixed it for you, John, even though in the process I was reducing the exposure my thoughts will receive.

Re: Maico Shark checking in...

Welcome Maico. Nice to have you aboard even if you are making me jealous with that bit about the log cabin and trout stream.

you must have an alternate dimension version of ABX...congrats!...I went on vacation at the end of May for 8 days and when I came back and clicked 'New Posts' it barely filled 1 page...little to no activity here...with the same 5-6 posters the only ones posting anything

the 'Edit' feature is strange...I used to not be able to edit my posts after a short fixed period of time (few minutes? few hours?) but over the past few months I am able to edit somewhat like normal---hours, even days after a post...it stops me from editing after some fixed period but it is not the short time that I used to see here

EDIT: just edited my post 8 minutes after the original post...I will try editing again in another few hours/days

EDIT #2: edited my post 1 hour after the original post

EDIT #3: edited again 7 hours later

Makes me wonder if ABX can stage a comeback. Anyways, welcome.
