Meet Microsoft's antidote to Vista

Julie Larson-Green hopes you'll like Windows 7. If not, well, now you and a billion other people know who to blame...

Microsoft is counting on Larson-Green, its head of "Windows Experience," to deliver an operating system that delights the world's PC users as much as its last effort, Vista, disappointed them...

Interesting article here

But I still hate Office 2007 so much that I refuse to use it.

Re: Meet Microsoft's antidote to Vista

January release date for Windows 7???

Where does this guy come up with that??? That would just be.......

Plain stupid on Microsoft's part......as long as the software is ready (and I think it is-----because it's built on a core product that has been out for three years)......yes----I'm talking about "awful" Vista-----that same awful Vista that I have used on a daily basis for the last few years and enjoyed it immensely....

I bet this journalist is another of those "Vista Bashers"-----who has never even used it....

But be that as it may.....I look forward to Windows 7 because it will do one thing Vista has trouble with-----and that is run extremely well on lower horsepower machines.

I think MS won't miss the opportunity for the Holiday sales season....I see them with a total advertising blitz starting Septemeber with a release in Odctober.

I also think Julie Larson-Green is cute.....

so there you go.....

"Just as Vista was a magnet for complaints, Office 2007 won accolades from software critics and regular users"

really?...I'm still waiting for a new version of Office that will make me want to upgrade from Office 2000 Premium

Re: Meet Microsoft's antidote to Vista

I hate Office 2007 as well....

and I use little Add-ons to bring the menus back (I'm soooo retro...)

but I swear to you that for as many people I find that HATE it----I find an equal amount that just LOVE it!

The ones who love it say that it now is just so easy----and it all makes more sense....

Well......not to me....

But maybe there is something to all of Julie Larson Green's research----at least for many folks....

Re: Meet Microsoft's antidote to Vista

I use Office 2003 and have never used 2007, but I am sure I would not like not having menus. I also think making them unavailable is as disappointing to me as the classic start menu not being available in Win7.

Re: Meet Microsoft's antidote to Vista

I think the new UI in Office 2007 is a natural and logical progression from the old one. Basically in past versions we had to have all the toolbars that we frequently needed docked - taking up valuable screen space (or otherwise try squeezing the buttons we needed onto the main toolbar).

Office 2007 tries to solve that by having separate groups of related items arrranged as tabs at the top of the page and then having a common toolbar for those common operations we need. Seems straightforward to me. Only thing is there is a learning curve from the old to the new, because we just got too used to the old UI over the years.

The only real problem IMO with the UI in 2007 is that there are so many features that we never use that just sit there cluttering up the interface and looking a little complicated. All they need to do to solve that is identify the features that are most often used by the greatest number of users and hide the others.
Then people could just add buttons back as they need them, rather than the other way around of having to remove buttons they dont need (which means you have to work out what each one is for to decide if you need them or not).

I also think M$ needs to add a "what can I use this for?" feature to the help system. That kind of help is scattered throughout the rest of the help which is of the "how do I use this?" type and so the help text is often confusing and irrelevant.

If they just hired me I could solve it.

Re: Meet Microsoft's antidote to Vista

So Mrs. hyphenated-name hopes we will like it. Gee, I feel so warm and fuzzy since she empathizes with me. For the record, even though I use my home computer virtually every day, I cannot even recall the last time I booted into Windows and somehow I have survived.

Additionally, if Office 2007 is the “sleeper hit” of the “Vista era,” Microsoft is still out of touch with reality. That statement reminds me of the numerous press releases from Microsoft over many months stating how Vista was taking the market by storm.

Re: Meet Microsoft's antidote to Vista

What I find amusing is that I don't feel like I need an "antidote" to Vista. I'm using it and I am absolutely loving it.

If Windows 7 turns out to be supremely better than Vista then I will consider upgrading but, seriously, Windows Vista has been a total joy for me to use.

Re: Meet Microsoft's antidote to Vista

Oh, don't get me started. The IT manager at work installed Office 2007 last week and I'm already ready to murder someone.

As for Vista and Win 7, whatever floats peoples boat. Myself, 95% of the time I'm still on XP. (Got Vista for testing DX10 stuff).
