Had mostly a DVD Christmas this year. Got the following:

Saving Private Ryan (D-Day 60th Anniversary Edition)

Full Metal Jacket (my Kubrick collection is becoming increasingly complete!)

Amadeus - Director's Cut (special edition)

Das Boot - Director's Cut (Superbit special edition)

After Christmas I found two $10 bargains:

Cast Away ("Wiiiiiiiiiiiilsonnnnnnn!")

Raging Bull

I've seen all these before. I never buy a DVD without having seen the movie first.

Remaining on my DVD want list, donations accepted :

Master and Commander. I actually haven't seen this but based on the IMDB rating and based on the comments in AVS Forum about the sound effects I'm sure I'll like it.

Alien

Aliens. I mostly haven't bought these two because they are only offered in Alien Quadrilogy, which includes the horrid Alien3 and the abysmal Alien Resurrection, both awful pieces of drek I refuse to spend money on and that don't deserve to be in the same store as the first two. Blech!

Enemy at the Gates, although it has a horrible ending.

Just watched "The Deep Hunter" A deep movie, but it was kinda drawn out. Not sure exactly if there was any real message other than how bad Vietnam messed some folks up.

Nice collections Fraoch. If you don't already have them, I think that Black Hawk Down and We Were Soldiers are two excellent additions to anyone's modern war movie collection.

I think the IMDB rating on We Were Soldiers is a bit lower than deserved, IMHO - but, it depends on what you are looking for I guess...

Saving Private Ryan - does have a higher production value than the other two, a broader field of top notch actors and absolutely terrifying sound effects on the D-Day landing with my 5.1 system.

Black Hawk Down was actually one of the first films I saw in DD 5.1 over satellite with my current set of speakers. It was quite good and could very well be "DVD-worthy" (tm)

I remembered seeing We Were Soldiers and not being terribly impressed...or not impressed enough to remember it.

The war movie genre is filled with a lot of "everything's great, we're the good guys" propaganda and I like to watch films that either see something from another point-of-view without showing them as the good guys either, or show people and characters in shades of grey rather than black-and-white (figuratively speaking). One series which stands out in this regard is Band of Brothers, in regards to complex characters with some flaws.

That's why I liked Das Boot and Enemy at the Gates. Another, much earlier film like this is Paths of Glory.

I should have taken the time to see Downfall, although it's now available on DVD...hmm!

Well, We Were Soldiers, to the best of my knowledge, was pretty close to what happened. And, I thought, showed the enemy side well, through the VC commander and the VC 'private' and the historical open battle scene. The added bit with the wives and their experience of the casualties of the war was an interesting twist. But, everyone has their own viewpoint.

Band of Brothers was very impressive. Saving Private Ryan stands out for stunning realism, such as in the last act where the German soldier kill the American (forgot his name) by slowing thrusting the knife into his chest - if one doesn't feel that, one must be dead or a sociopath!

Master and Commander

Multiple posts at AVS Forum confirm that this has an amazing, sub-popping soundtrack.

My brother got me a gift card for my birthday, and I picked it up today.

I don't usually buy DVDs of movies I've never seen before, but I took a chance on this one and I wasn't disappointed!

There were a couple of historical boo-boos (a single use of the "F" word, for example, but I don't think it was used at the time, a member of the crew who was fully literate, which was extremely rare) but overall it was very realistic. It was immersive, it felt like you were there on board a wooden ship.

I liked the variety, it wasn't all naval action, it was sometimes about travel by sail, the importance of discipline, etc.

And the soundtrack, well...wow! Cannon balls flying through my living room! Fantastic!

We just watched that one last night...my wife loved it and I thought it was pretty good. Diane Lane is very watchable. Under the Tuscon Sun was good too.

Just got done watching Grizzly Man...he lived in Alaska with the grizzlies for years.
I won't ruin it for you, but this guy was certified nuts.

Gavsman, what does 'ost' mean?

Just watched Serenity. I thought it was an eclectic sci-fi film where the characters where more interesting than the plot (which had a few too many predictable features for me - but also some unusual twists). The overriding story arc involving River and the secret that she holds is an interesting cautionary tale on the abuse of power and disregard for human freedom. Scored higher on imdb than I would have thought, but there are some serious fans of this movie and the Sci-Fi channel series which preceded it.
