Doom,

I liked it, some of the scenes are pretty much straight out of the game.

10.000 B.C.

One of the best movies to come along in a long time. Why do I say that?

Because the whole thing is completely fresh and original. It's not based on some comicbook hero or computer game or historical event or some book someone wrote and sold the movie rights.

Not quite right. I saw 10,000BC last week and the people who made it must have done some reading. There's 2 or 3 people who have written books and done some TV specials on ancient Egypt - with some interesting theories, and if true will rewrite human history. Look up Graham Hancock, Robert Bauval (and John Anthony West) - I have one of their books "The message of the Sphinx" (They also have written Fingerprints Of The Gods and The Orion Mystery). Robert Bauval's first book, The Orion Mystery, looks at the Great Pyramid and the 2 smaller pyramids. His theory is that the builders were trying to build a "star map" on the ground with the Great Pyramid and the 2 smaller ones (and I think some other structures) as the stars from Orion's belt. Further, for the Sphinx, their theories is that the erosion on the Sphinx is from water, not wind. Since there hasn't been wet climate in Egypt for thousands of years (it was once a tropical) this means that the Sphinx must have been built thousands of years earlier (than the current dating of 2,500BC). Also the direction that the Sphinx faces (looking into the sky) the constellation of Leo would have appeared there at 10,500BC. Hancock and Bauval believe that the Sphinix was constructed at about 10,500BC (perhaps later at around 20,000BC - I think this is West). Basically I think the core of their theory is that long ago, there was an advanced civilization that built these structions that fell. Human beings had to start all over again and this chapter in our history is missing.

For the movie 10,000BC, they arrive in Egypt where the Great Pyramid and the 2 smaller ones are under construction, and in one quick scene, you see the Sphinx being built. This area was ruled by a "God" referred to as the "Almighty". There was scene where 2 of the captured hunter males are talking to each other, and one of them mentions that he has heard that these people "came from land that sank under the water" - Atlantis prehaps? Atlantis was ruled by 5 pairs of male twins - well there use to be 3 "Almighties" that ruled this land until someone came bearing "the mark" and killed 2 of them. The surviving "Almighty" feared that someone will one day come bearing "the mark" and kill him. The head priest freaked when he saw the woman character bearing "the mark" - and confirmed it by comparinig it to the star patterns from Orion's Belt. So, definitely they incorporated all of this into the movie.

Re: What movie did you just see?

Over the last two weekends Mrs. TQ and I watched several films. "Troy-Director's Cut" was outstanding. A Hollywood epic in the classic form, Eric Bana as Hector and Brad Pitt as Achilles brought these roles beautifully to light, though everyone (Peter O'Toole, Brian Cox, Orlando Bloom) performed wonderfully. An incredible tragedy but entertaining nonetheless.

We also watched a diaper load of feces titled "Shoot "em Up" with the generally excellent Clive Owen, though even he couldn't save this study of bovine scatology.
One of the worst films (and I do mean "film", like that you'd see in a petri dish) I have ever seen.

"3:10 to Yuma", the remake with Christan Bale and Russell Crowe, was excellent. It may well become one of my favorite, all-time westerns. An intelligent story with Crowe's Ben Wade being particularly well drawn, this is a must-see for any western fan.
