Eastern Promises

might make my Top 10 movies of all time list...amazing movie...David Cronenberg is slowly becoming one of my favorite directors and Viggo Mortensen just keeps getting better and better with each movie...he owns this role as the 'driver' for the Russian mafia...I wasn't as high on Cronenberg's previous movie "A History of Violence' as a lot of other people were but this movie raises the bar significantly

the movie is very bad ***/hard core and not for the squeamish...very gory...no guns at all in this movie as every killing/fight is done with knives...there is one particular fight scene in the movie which is probably the best hand to hand fight scene I have ever scene...Viggo Mortensen's character fighting 2 mobsters naked and the movie earns its hard R rating from that fight alone (be warned lots of full frontal male nudity---Viggo really went all out)

I was reading a few reviews of the film after I watched it and everyone seemed to love it...can't believe it was not more popular...here is what Roger Ebert (a well known film critic) said about that particular fight scene...

"At a time when movie "fight scenes" are as routine as the dances in musicals, Nikolai engages in a fight in this film that sets the same kind of standard that "The French Connection" set for chases. Years from now, it will be referred to as a benchmark"

I totally agree...the movie kicks all sorts of butt...everyone should watch this movie if you enjoy quality filmmaking

A+

Re: What movie did you just see?

I caught "The Dark Knight" Monday. I was speechless for nearly an hour after seeing it, as it was much more than what I expected and it took me a while to assimilate it. I loved "Batman Begins" but this sequel is just so far beyond even that great movie.

My current thoughts are that it was not so much an action film but more of an intense thriller-drama with action in it. Heath Ledger was astounding and deserves at least an academy award nomination for best actor. To say we've lost an amazing talent in Ledger is the greatest of understatements.

The special effects craft that went into this film was the best I have ever seen. Don’t confuse “visual” effects (Star Wars) with “special” effects, which are careful set pieces. The work here sets a new bar.

The script writing kept me guessing and in a twisted state of knots all throughout the film and the fact that director Christopher Nolan was able to fit so much Hitchcock-like disturbing creepiness into a PG-13 movie is a testament to his vast skill.

I just can’t state how magnificent this film is and can’t wait to see it again in my home theater.

Heath Ledger was an incredibly good villan.. I never thought anybody would match Jack's Joker, but he did.
God bless him !

Re: What movie did you just see?

I can't even watch the Tim Burton Batman films anymore, and I usually love Burton's work. He's made so many great films (Ed Wood being my favorite) but he simply didn't get it with the Batman. The line towards the end of the first Burton Batman film where Batman says to the Joker "I'm going to kill you" shows a fundamental lack of understanding of the character. Contrast that with the scene in The Dark Knight where the Joker throws the knowledge that Batman can't kill him back into Batman's face and you have a small part of the massive greatness of The Dark Knight.

As far as comparing Nicholson's Joker with Ledger's...I can't help but think there is no comparison. Jack's Joker was a cartoon, in keeping with the nature of Burton's vision of his film. Ledger's Joker, by contrast, was sheer malice and psychopathic chaos...a genuine horror of a person and got under one's skin (mine, in particular) in a way that made for a landmark performance.

(Don't even get me started on the Joel Schumacher films...gah...)

Re: What movie did you just see?

On a completely different note, we recently watched Charlie Chaplin's 1931 silent film "City Lights."

City Lights - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It was recently voted by the American Film Institute as the all-time greatest American romantic comedy movie ever made (Woody Allen's "Annie Hall" was number two; among more recent films "Moonstruck" and "Sleepless In Seattle" were also in the top 10).

AFI: 10 Top 10

For anyone with the patience for an old black-and-white silent film, you will find it to be an exceptional experience. There is a boxing match scene somewhere in the middle, which has got to be one of the funniest 6 minutes or so that you'll ever see in a movie. And the ending of the movie is widely considered to be, in an understated way, one of the most touching endings in the history of the movies.

Truly wonderful!

No Country for Old Men

hard to describe this movie...a very surreal, experience that definitely requires a second viewing for me to fully comprehend the themes and deeper meanings the film explored (life, death, fate)...the film is not what I was expecting going in...I had to do some research after I saw the movie to fully understand what just happened...not your typical movie...the Coen Brothers really are unique filmmakers...apparently the movie is a very faithful adaptation of the acclaimed novel by Pulitzer Prize winner Cormac McCarthy...the movie also won Best Picture at this years Oscars

I liked the movie...don't know if I loved it...I might...the acting was superb---Javier Bardem played one of the best villians in movie history...the movie doesn't explain everything and leaves a lot to the imagination...when I first saw the ending I thought it sucked but after doing some research maybe I was too hasty...definitely need to watch it again

In my opinion...

Movies as an art form can leave things to the imagination and open to interpretation. I have no problem with this at all.

But if you had to do research to change your impressions of the ending, then while the movie may be successful as a piece of art, it failed as a piece of entertainment (at least to a degree).

Just the way I feel about such things.

Dru -- If you've never seen it, do try to take in Kubrick's 1957 film "Paths of Glory." It is an anti-war war film, based on an incident that occurred during World War I. Incredibly, despite an almost total lack of any blood and gore, and although it is directed in a very understated way, it is in my opinion one of the most harrowing films ever made. Kubrick was an artist!

Re: What movie did you just see?

I remember watching "Paths of Glory" (Wege zum Ruhm) many years ago on television. Didn't knew it was an early Kubrick.

Last night i was watching

Ghost in the shell 2.

I loved the first one for the graphics, the story and the dialogues.
The secodn one has improved graphics, a good story and even better dialogues.

Greetings

Dru

Tropic Thunder... R. Downey Jr. rules, Ben Stiller's cast is a blast, but a great surprise actually comes from Tom Cruise, he's just fantastic out of his usual character box... a must see
