Finally a good movie again with W.Smith.

Watchmen

Very good, but not great and not deserving, I thought, of all the hype.

I just watched Casino Royale again - nice to see the Bond franchise re-invigorated.

Re: What movie did you just see?

The last movie that I saw in the theater was Taken. I saw it on Valentine's Day and it was really really good.

The last dvd I watched was We Own the Night which I also enjoyed.

Re: What movie did you just see?

I just saw A Clockwork Orange, directed by Stanley Kubrick... on DVD of course as it was made in 1971.

I found this old movie still had a big impact and still seems to be valid.
Very different in style to what we're used to.

I also re-watched Full Metal Jacket... another great movie.

Re: What movie did you just see?

I never got to see "A Clockwork Orange." I assume you've seen "2001: A Space Odyssey," one of the all-time great films, in my opinion. I'd recommend that at some point when you're in the mood for a heavy, serious film, see Kubrick's "Paths of Glory," with Kirk Douglas, from around 1957, about an incident in World War I. It has an anti-war theme (although you wouldn't know it from the opening scenes). It is also one of the most powerful films ever made, imo, and he accomplishes that with very little of the blood and gore which typifies modern films that deal with similar subject matter.

Best,
-- Al

Re: What movie did you just see?

2001 is one of my favourite movies... HAL (IBM) heh heh ... although today I suppose we'd have to swap out the Russian characters for North Korean...
I cant imagine what ppl thought of A Clockwork Orange in 1971... it must have been shocking... no wonder it was banned

[edit] some trivia; Malcolm McDowell played the star in A Clockwork Orange and was also the voice for president John Henry Eden in Fallout 3...

Thanks for the tip on Paths of Glory... I'm going out looking for it now ...

Although it is often conjectured that the name HAL was based on a one letter shift from the name IBM, this has been denied by both Clarke and 2001 director Stanley Kubrick. In 2010: Odyssey Two, Clarke speaks through the character of Dr. Chandra, who characterized this idea as: "[u]tter nonsense! [...] I thought that by now every intelligent person knew that H-A-L is derived from Heuristic ALgorithmic".[2][3]

You know, it was a great movie and I know its doing well with the critics... and I'm going to see it again before commenting too much about it... however I want to say that first impressions for me were that its all action... and doesnt get into philosophy/science/social issues as a lot of the Star Trek stuff often has...

Re: What movie did you just see?

Just saw Star Trek and absolutely loved it even my wife did. Really loved the way all the characters where there from the original series! If you liked the original series you love it to!
