Re: Where Has Everyone Gone???

Age is the cause of our decline, I wonder. Anyone know about the Bleedinedge forum. They seemed to decline faster then us here at ABX. And near as I can tell, a younger median membership age. Its not one thing that put us in decline. But a mix of things and events.

Re: Where Has Everyone Gone???

I agree it is a mix...we could point to a number of things. Stagnant front page has been much talked about...not much news out there I guess. People not happy with the front page and the non inviting look to pull in new members. Add popups, no new content, no articles (or a way to even put them up).
What is here to draw anyone in and keep them here?

Most of us that have been here a while know we never did recover from the blowup of the past. Many members left and found new forums. They are gone, or became mods elsewhere, and have happily forgotten about us.
I've noticed a couple want to blame the few that are left for not saving it.

Who's to blame...all of us. Or none of us.
We still have a core group of great people...older, sure. But terrific and loyal members that keep me coming back for a look.

Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown

admins/mods share a greater responsibility as they were the ones mostly responsible for the direction of the site...having a laid back, laissez faire attitude hurt ABX and in turn turned it into what it is now...Oz, kONG etc were plain and simple too nice and laid back...nice attributes to have but I don't know if that served ABX well in the long run

ABX took on their laid back 'What did you have for Lunch today' forum mentality...nothing wrong with having a forum with a focus like that but the site as it exists today is the realization of those early decisions...I've said it from the beginning that PCB, Miles etc were ostracized for having a vision and made into scapegoats...at least they had a vision which they tried and failed to implement...ABX has never and probably will never recover from this...that was the turning point

I'm sure Oz is a nice guy in the real world but it was a big mistake making him an Admin after the PCB regime ended...his role as mod of the Folding forum was a perfect fit pre-PCB but the decision to make him an Admin was obviously done 1)to appease the long time members and 2)to install a guy who would not rock the boat and be nice to everybody...the problem was that he never made the hard decisions because he was afraid of the ramifications...ABX has been on a steady decline ever since

by the time Sanjay bought the site from CJ the damage was already done...too late now...Sanjaya started out shaky but has recovered nicely but ABX now seems like the ugly stepchild of the CrowdGather network

Re: Where Has Everyone Gone???

Poly,

While I think that there was a good bit of validity in your earlier post in this thread, and while I'm not sufficiently familiar with the "blowup" of a few years ago to be able to comment on its after-effects, I think that to blame the decline in the Forum on the fact that some nice people have been administering it and moderating it is, to put it simply, a bit ridiculous. Notwithstanding the fact that the timing may have been roughly coincident.

Regards,
-- Al

Re: Where Has Everyone Gone???

Well that was nice...that's fine if you want to place the blame on the people left to sweep up the ashes, but you don't understand half of what happened and I'm not going to air it here.
I suppose I should've just let the site die instead of trying to stop the bleeding. You've convinced me I made a mistake.

EDIT - thank you Al - your comments are appreciated.

it's not the 'nice' part but the 'laid back' part that had more to do with it...I don't know if you frequent other forums but just for reference go visit Xtremesystems or Guru3D...look at the Admins/Mods and you'll see that the direction of each site fits in perfectly with the guys in charge...the members then follow suit because the forum as a whole has an identity

XtremeSystems is a hard core overclocking forum because their main Admins are hard core overclockers...same with pretty much any other forum on the net...my point was that ABX had no identity under Oz and friends...they should have put their stamp (any stamp) on the site and not let it dissolve into a ghosttown and then claim ignorance as to what may have caused these issues

I'm not trying to bash Oz and the band that's why I put in the 'nice' part as they really do seem like nice guys...but facts are facts and you may see it as a 'coincidence' but I see it as something different

Re: Where Has Everyone Gone???

Last time I checked, the people writing the checks decided what direction their site was going to go.

wow, so I guess PCBruiser, Paragon etc must have been writing some big checks during the time the were trying to implement their ideas of making ABX into a more technical forum...

I know what you're feeling Oz...it's a natural reaction...human nature...denial is a fickle thing...but in the end even Bush admitted he made some mistakes like giving a news conference under that 'Mission Accomplished' banner

the fact of the matter is that the amount of new active members is what keeps any site going and is where ABX lacks in comparison to other forums...ABX is dull now...I click 'New Posts' and maybe 5-6 posts will show up in a 24 hour period (on a good day)...the members that left ABX are still around you just have to know where to find them

only way to 'fix' ABX is to get more members interested in posting...the folks at ABX may not like it but it's true---ABX median membership age is too old...young(er) people are what drives forums...not retired people...get younger, get active, get good word of mouth...that's what will get ABX back
I think Poly has a point about young----new blood.....

although I disagree with his analysis of Oz and the mods.....

people are people----and people get mad at each other----and blowups happen----are repaired----or not.....

and life moves on....

ABX has moved on....and the crowd that stays is a bit older.

I'm OK with that----and I don't really think our problem is "fixable"-----in the sense that ABX will go back to it's heyday with leading tech posters and overclocking kings.....

and I'm OK with that too....

I ask for help here----and I get it---quickly and accurately.
And it's GOOD help!!
I state my opinion----and I am not belittled for my thoughts....
I get treated courteously and I like the folks I share things with....

What's there not to like?

I personally miss TQ----and kONGO's wit----but that's life. And I think Oz is doing a great job given new circumstances he has to contend with....

If I wanted breathless teens going on about how great their overclock settings were-----I'd visit XS more frequently (not a knock on XS----I get a ton of excellent information from that site----but I never really share thoughts or ideas there.....)

I can find OTHER info elswhere----but I keep coming back to ABX because the core of folks here are pretty darn good people to share ideas with.

Having said all this-----

And-----I don't know how we fix this....

The new front page has got to go!!!

I REALLY tried to like it----it even looked kind of good----at first.....

But let's face it------it is a disaster.....

There HAS to be some kind of balance between advertising----and an ability to communicate.

Losing the new posts thread on the right hand side of the page was HUGE!!!

AND----we've GOT to get more frequent new News Articles.

I'll volunteer to post one a month----and if all our Hard Core guys chipped in----that's at least 1-2 articles per day!!!

OZ----is there any way we can talk to Sanjay and strike a balance----get some fo the stuff that used to WORK for ABX going again????

Well said John, and your right the Front page is a mess, same stuff there for weeks now, and not having the new post there was a mistake, but the way its been here, there's hardly any new post now anyways!

I still associate on another forum with the members that left here. Because of Ozzie, I think not. It was their heavy handed style, PCBruiser, Paragon, and etc. ABX was loosing members fast and good members at that. To stem the flow of loss CJ stepped in and got rid PCBruiser, Paragon, and etc. He CJ wanted no more ironfisted mods period. Why because he/CJ was scared as hell of loosing his site, and of law suits. Still there are other events that I could go on about, that factor in, and Ozzie ain't one of them. You seem to have all the answers polonyc2. But it appears to me you need to stop and take another long hard look at things, that have went on here. ozzie is what helped keep members here. I know because I also was ready to leave.
Man I've heard some stuff, and kept quiet. But enough is enough, age and Ozzie are NOT the reasons for ABX decline, but the opposite.....I'll leave it there before I GO to FAR........

He's around, but much less frequently, due to job circumstances as I indicated.
