98SE Error loading lmouse.drv. You must reinstall Windows The Windows install is about 2 years old and the mouse rarely registers. I did have it where I could let it set there and "warm up" for about half a day then on the next restart it would acknowledge the mouse. It hasn't been doing that for a few days now so I thought I'd try un/reinstalling the drivers. I tried the cd that came with my mouse but it didnt work. So I tried finding the correct ones in Windows...thought I did but then on next boot it says something to the effect that it couldnt find or load lmouse.vxd. Guess I'm not too handy using just the keyboard. So I Google search about it and find a site that has it for download: http://www.dynamiclink.nl/ So I put it on a floppy from this machine and paste it in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. I reboot ...dont get that error anymore but now it says, "Error loading lmouse.drv. You must reinstall Windows". Did a Google for it but can't come up with anything that makes sense to me. Well I did find the file lmouse.drv at driverguide but I don't know where I should put it this time. In the same C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM perhaps? The mouse is a Logitech Mouseman Wheel USB using PS/2 adapter which I've always used. I've tried putting it in the USB but I couldnt get it to work(b4 these errors but during the "warm up" periods). Win98SE, PIII-650, and DFI P2XBL Rev. DE+ mobo. I've got a few things I'd like to backup which I guess you cant do in safemode right cuz I can get there? I'd like to avoid reinstalling Windows ATM thx for your time

You can boot to Safe Mode Command Prompt and delete the file you pasted from there. Then I suggest that you try a different mouse. From what you say having had this problem for 2 years it will either be the mouse or the PS2 port. Is the PS2/USB adapter the one supplied by Logitech? Any mouse will work with the default windows drivers. The bespoke software will only enable the "bells and whistles" for that particular piece of kit. Try uninstalling the Logitech drivers from Add/Remove programs in Control Panel.

You think I should delete the file? I thought I had solved half of the problem. I meant it has been 2 years since I had reinstalled Windows and I figured it was bit rot or the mouse just liked to bork on old installations....iuno where I'm getting this from. Well I'm pretty sure this same mouse did this before my last reinstall of Windows. I forget if this is the original adapter to be honest but it worked for a good while then my computer just keeps getting worse and worse about not finding my mouse. And I have already uninstalled the Logitech drivers that came with my mouse.

Well dont take it the wrong way. I meant that it "seemed" I fixed the original error and then this other appeared. This 2nd one may have appeared anyway or it may have not. Unless you know something about these I dont Oh I forgot about the "You must install Windows" part. Yeau that doesnt sound good....

Ok, i know this thread is a bit old but it does not seem that a resolution was found. So, here it is. (least this is what I did on a ME workstation) Start > run > msconfig > (tab)System.ini > boot > (uncheck) mouse.drv=LMouse.drv Your system should now boot and reinstall generic mouse drivers. From there you can reinstall the logitec mouse drivers (or rid yourself of the damn thing). EDIT: (oops!, that was all done in safe mode)

I got this problem when I rebooted my PC after testing a few mouses and the problem seemed to come with the testings. OK, now the solution that I got just with a little brainrun. I had a laptop without network connection or a floppy drive. Safemode 1) First edit the file x:/Windows/system.ini [boot] -- mouse.drv=lmouse.drv to mouse.drv=mouse.drv [boot description] -- mouse.drv=Logitech Mouse to mouse.drv=Standard Mouse 2)For the second thing copy the file x:/Windows/system/msmouse.vxd as x:/Windows/system/lmouse.vxd That should solve the problem. Note: When you cannot copy the file in safe mode, try to reboot the computer in normal mode before the second thing.
