98se reinstall headaches

I'm in the process of porting all my stuff over to a brand new 120Gb Maxtor, but it is *not* going smoothly!

Yesterday's 98SE installation on the new drive turned out to be corrupt, so today I tried again. On try one, install hung at 46%. On tries 2 & 3, at the end of installation windows appeared saying

An error occurred loading C:\PROGRA~1\OUTLOO~1\oeimport.dll
An error occurred loading C:\PROGRA~1\OUTLOOK~1\msoe.dll
An error occurred loading C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\System\wab32.dll

Then when I tried to access my email account using the Verizon DSL line, I got a message somethikng like "can't find msoe.dll so can't logon.

So I renamed the existing files on the new drive and copied the complete contents of Outlook Express from the still-functioning 20Gb drive to the OE folder on the new drive, including of course oeimport.dll and msoe.dll. Didn't help. Same error message.

So now I'm stuck, since I live in the world of classical music, not in the computer world. Enlightment will be deeply appreciated.

Thanks and salutations, David L

I almost always clone drives in W98SE using the xcopy command.

1) Setup old drive as master, C:
2) Setup new drive as slave, D:
3) Format new drive
4) Boot normally into W98
5) Open a DOS window (execute command.com)
6) Type the following command at the C: prompt:

xcopy c: d:/e/c/h/r/k/s/v/d
where d: (or whatever) is the new drive, or first partition of the new drive

7) Everything will copy to the new drive
8) Make new drive master and reboot
9) Everything should behave as it did with the old drive

You could also try XXCOPY. I've cloned 98SE boot drives twice with this.

Complete cloning instructions here.

Good luck.

Many thanks for the responses. Problem is, the OS on my old drive is *also* corrupted, and quite often (like just now) a window appears telling me to reinstall OS! So, regrettably, I can't clone old to new.

Still scratching head...

Any more suggestions?

Thanks, David L

Backup all your important data right away. Then you should probably reinstall the OS from scratch.

Edit: now that I read more closely, sounds like you have. This is almost looking like some sort of hardware problem. Could also be a virus. Check for virii first. Hopefully someone will jump in here to see what the best thing would be for troubleshooting hardware problems. As a start, download your hard drive manufacturers' testing applications, available at their website. Test BOTH drives.

As usual with WindowsXP, it won't allow you to do that. From http://www.xxcopy.com/xxcopy10.htm:

"The technique discussed in this article applies primarily for Windows 9x and ME cases. If your C: drive is loaded with Win NT4/2000/XP, you will not get a bootable disk."

Following up on Fraoch's comments on xxcopy, I doubt that xcopy works with XP, either. I've never tried it.

Try a new cd-rom drive and cable. It happened to me once. The old cd drive wore out and would not properly re-install stuff. It was a good deal though. I got a LiteOn.

I downloaded Maxtor's Maxblast utility and used it to check and low-level format the 120Gb HD. It checked out perfectly. Maxblast also reported that the cable is fine.

I have an old CDROM which I can swap into the machine, replacing the three-year-old Plexwriter, so that will be the next step. Only problem, I pulled the CDROM because it didn't seem to be functioning. If it really doesn't function when I swap it into the computer box, I may face the purchase of a DVD-CD burner/reader sooner than anticipated.

Thanks & salutations, David L

I'm going to get terribly obvious here, but I once had install errors similar to what you describe here. Turned out to be a fingerprint on the CD!

Something to check.

Fingerprints?

*That's* something I completely overlooked. I'll clean it and try again.

By the way, I pulled the Plexwriter and installed the ancient CDROM in its place. Turns out it is indeed hosed, as suspected. So now I'll return the Plexwriter to its drive bay and try again.

How does the proverb go? "If at first you don't succeed, GIVE UP!

Since the CD burner may be getting dodgy, I think it's time to retire it in favour of a DVD burner. Any personal favourites? I've been perfectly happy with the Plexwriter in the 2 1/2 years I've had it, so I'm considering the Plextor 504 ($150-160 at Pricewatch) or 708 ($200 + at PW).

Have I overlooked anything wonderful from other makers -- Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, et al? I'm looking for a universal model, both + and -. Excellent CD-burning (not necessarily very fast, but perfect pits) is critical since I'll use it to make Redbook CDs (this CPU functions as a DAW -- digital audio editor) in addition to archival digital audio workfiles to DVD (these files tend to be substantial, 2Gb - 4Gb is common).

Enough OT rambling.

Input appreciated.

Thanks, David L

If you always get files corrupted maybe your controller is shot?

Success. 'Twas dirt on the install CDROM.

It's great to leave Computer Hell...

Many thanks for all the input. *Most* helpful.

As soon as I read the advice to check the CDROM for dirt, it rang a bell, because two install attempts failed at *exactly* the same place.

Now, hopefully, I can get back to working with music.

Salutations, David L

With Win98SE now in place on the new 120Gb HD, I've spent the whole day copying 40 gigs of stuff to it. Time-consuming.

Something weird: I like to run msconfig so that I can tailor my Start Menu. But this installation won't let me. When I do Start > Run > msconfig *nothing happens.* Same thing when I use Find to get to msconfig. The file is located, but it refuses to open.

This is a new frustration. Is there an easy solution?

Thanks, David L
