| Hi all, I believe Microsoft may have solved the shutdown issue once and for all (well - maybe...). After browsing the latest Technet CD / Windows Millenium Knowledge Base, I discovered an article which explains about the NDIS.VXD file causing the majority of shutdown problems on 9x/Me. Eventually, the jist of it was that to enable shutdown properly with this vxd enabled - which you need for using any NIC - you have to ensure that the NIC is using it's own SEPERATE IRQ. My advice (unless you have a PS/2 mouse) is to use IRQ 12, as normally this will not be assigned to anything - just make sure that you turn off PS/2 mouse support in the BIOS. I have had the problems through 98, 98SE, and now Me, even after a complete rebuild. People have blamed the SB-Live! for causing this problem, but both Creative/Microsoft both state that this is not the case. Anyway, it worked for me - the first time a Microsoft fix has - so would suggust a few other people try it, and then post your results here! James |

| Well that's spooky...after trouble shooting shutdown problem with the new system I built which was running Me for over a week I too found that Ndis.vxd was causing the problems on my system. If people go into msconfig, click on the Static VxD tab and uncheck Ndix.vxd....reboot and then test to see if they can now reboot/shutdown. I found I could but need to have it enabled for my cable modem to work I will try assigning specific IRQ's to my 2 NIC's but does anyone know how to make Me recognise these setting as it just seems to allocate the IRQ's itself & ignores the BIOS setting! tia |

| Whoa, just finished my CUSL2-C/P3 1 gig build a couple day ago and have been having only 2 problems: shutdown hang and NIC (RoadRunner). The RR tech told me *today* that the NIC had to have its own IRQ; the 4 I talked to yesterday said nothing about it (blamed 'network problems'). My problem now is uninstalling ACPI to free up the IRQ (I put it in accidentally when I ran the INF Update on the ASUS CD). Any idea how to remove ACPI without starting from scratch? |

| Good find there Slinky This sounds like another one to add to the arsenal. Maybe this might can shed a little light on all those shutdown probs some of the folks are posting about. I have done the IRQ and reserving bit on my board. At one time I was convinced this was the way to do it. These days I'm not reserving anything in the bios with plug & play off and having no probs with it. Even my USB's are working... It's extremely possible that after a few card changes, a couple mods, and some history with this board that I have a combination that likes to "play" together. Thank you for sharing that with us.

| My fix to shutdown problem I too had the shutdown problem. I fixed it by disabling SB16 Emulation in the device manager. I don't use any dos apps that need the emulator, so it was the fix of choice for my system. Shut down works perfect now. |

| There have been so many posts about the infamous 'shutdown' problems people have had with the CUSL2. There are many variants to the 'problem' -- ie. BSOD, blank frozen screen, etc... But more importantly, there are as many documented fixes as there are problems. I USED to have shutdown problems & tried many things before they were resolved. My version of the shutdown problem was that on about 30% of shutdowns I would get a blank black frozen screen & I'd have to power down manually with the POWER button. This is what worked for me (see system config below) -- 1) disabled SB16 emulation in Device Manager -- I don't play any DOS games so I didn't need it 2) disabled one of the two USB controllers -- I still have 2 USB devices plugged into the original ports on the board with no problems 3) put my SoundBlaster Live! care into slot 2 with IRQ #5 reserved for it 4) put my NIC in slot 6 (no IRQ reserved) Since I've implemented these changes, I have not had one problem with shutdown! I think the take home message is that there are many twists on the shutdown problem, & each may be unique for each user. The answer is to try to implement as many of the proposed 'fixes' as you need to make the problem go away. What worked for one user may not do the trick for you, so it's important to be patient & realize that most users have had good luck getting the issues resolved with a little tweaking. | I also had this shut down/restart problem before. But, after reading this forum, i assign manually the IRQs to different PCI slots in the BIOS setting and .... All my PCI cards and also the AGP display card still shared the same IRQ 11 and the problem was still there. Then I reserve the IRQ 11 in BIOS and i can shut down or restart the machine fairly well except one strange problem. I can now shut down the machine (i verified this by looking at the power supply fan which was actually shut down) but the power LED is still ON. When i browse the device manager, i notice that all the PCI devices are still sharing the same IRQ 11 but ... the AGP display card picks up IRQ 9.
