Can this be done in 98se?

I have a win98se machine on my lan that I would like, when turned on, to boot to a command prompt instead of the windows gui. I suspect requiring a password to load the gui is out, but, a black screen with a

c:/

would confuse the @#^! out of the people around here. They would consider it broken and shut it back off, hoping that I wouldn't discover they broke it .

Check and see if you have bios password or harddrive password. That would stop the boot process until either one or the other were supplied.

Failing that create an autoexec.bat files to force you to C:\
prompt followed with a stop or halt command. You could even post a message

"If you see this message call your support personel because a security violation has occurred."

That should do the trick.

After re-reading your post I think the autoexec.bat with warning message displayed solution is far more elegant. I was thinking of creating a easily corrected error in autoexec or config sys. That would have been crude. Would it be too much to ask for an example of the syntax required to display such a message?

Hey if we could all remember everything all the time we wouldn't need the abxzone.

I have learned to talk my problems out loud some times even to myself in a manner of speaking from my inner self to my external senses and youd be surprised with some of the answer that emerge when you think your at a dead end.

Also you don't have to remember evrything just know where to find it or the answer.

I'll check but I think a type command followed by the message text would get the job done.

Glad I could be of some help.
