Dialup?

I have an old computer that has Win98SE on it. Lately when you start it up, it starts up dialup connection. You have to cancel it several times before it will go away. Also sometimes when you click on a program icon it will bring up the dial up window. Any help?

Thanks Clint

I remember that happening to me, but it was so long ago I can't remember. Maybe delete your dial up connection? Or everytime it asks "do you want to connect, say no, instead of cancel?

You didn't mention whose dialer pops up or whether it pops up when you click on IE.

If this is the problem them you need to go into ie properties and go to the connections tab and click on either never dial or only dial when there is no network connection.

My guess is you have aol setup to dial.

Or if you don't use the dailup at all then just remove the dial connection with the remove capability.

dialup?

I do have a dialup connection and I don't have AOL. I found this on Norton's web site. Unwanted launch of dialup networking.
Solution 3 - Windows 98 - Remove automatic launching of Dial-Up Networking
Follow these steps to disable the "Prompt to use Dial-Up Networking" option:
Double-click My Computer.
Double-click Dial-Up Networking. The Dial-Up Networking window opens.
Choose Connections and click Settings.
Check "Don't prompt to use Dial-Up Networking" and click OK.

I hope this will fix it.

I think if you do this, it will still auto dial, but it simply won't prompt you that it is dialing.

Follow rjs735's suggestion and check in the properties of IE.

Also, open the modem icon in control panel, select properties of your modem card, select the connection tab, check "wait for dial-tone before dialing", click OK and exit out.

The same thing happened to me on 2 of my home computers that both had Norton AV on them and used a local dial up service.
At the time, I was using 98se on one and XP home on the other.
It seems that Norton had set itself up to automatically log to the internet and attempt to update itself every time I would boot up.
I went back in to Norton and configured everything manually so I could do what I wanted, when I wanted to.
I eventually got rid of NAV altogether and went with a free AV.
Good luck,

Dialup?

I also found this.

Dial-up networking attempts repeatedly to connect during startup and shutdown after installing Norton AntiVirus

Situation:
You installed Norton AntiVirus (NAV) and may have run LiveUpdate. When you restart the computer, your dial-up connection repeatedly prompts you to connect to the Internet. This may also occur during shutdown. You must click Cancel repeatedly to stop the process. Sometimes you may need to connect briefly to the Internet to stop the process.

Solution:
This problem occurs on computers that connect to the Internet via modem (dial-up connection) when Internet Explorer is configured to "Dial whenever a network connection is not present." It can also be caused if the certain Internet Explorer security settings are enabled. To resolve the problem, try each solution in the order listed.

To change the Internet Explorer connection option

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: Setting the connection option to "Never dial a connection" means that you will have to manually launch your dial-up connection when you want to connect to the Internet (by double-clicking the dial-up connection icon and then clicking Connect). Your computer will no longer automatically connect when you launch Internet enabled applications.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Internet Explorer.
Click Tools > Internet Options.
When viewing the Internet Options window, click the Connections tab.
Select Never dial a connection.
Click Apply.
Click OK to close the Internet Options window.
If this does not fix the problem, then continue on to the next section.

To clear the IE "Check for server certificate revocation" and "Check for Publisher's certificate revocation" check boxes
Open Internet Explorer.
Click Tools > Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab.
Under Security, clear the "Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)" and "Check for Publisher's certificate revocation" check boxes.

Click Apply > OK. Restart the computer when prompted.

I now have, and always have had, my computers set up to dial-up and connect to either IE or OE when I click on their Icons in the "Quick Launch" Tool bar.
