DVD Movies Stutter when playing DVD's in 98SE

Hey guys,

I'm working on my buddies Toshiba Tecra 750DVD laptop that has a built in dvd player. His OS crashed (98SE) so I clean installed 98SE and made sure that the DVD bios drivers, along with all other bios/driver updates were installed/flashed properly as needed.

However, regardless of what dvd software I use ( DivX, Windows Media Player, Real Player, WinDVD ) it just keeps stuttering when playing dvd movies. I've tried several different discs but the same result.

I've also checked that there's no IRQ conflicts of any kind. The only "weird"
this is when I enable DMA, the machine won't boot and I can't get back into
windows at all.......so I guess I'm reinstalling tonight

Here's a link to the laptop's info/drivers:

Anyone have any ideas? I'm almost starting to think that it was like this before.....

Any help would be greatly appreciated

If you can't enable dma mode then something is messed up, it could be the board the ribbon cable or the dvd drive. For one thing i would install windowsxp home at the least (: but thats a given.

check for a dvd drive bios update, and motherboard bios update and motherboard drivers and pretty much just everything. It can only help.

tried all bios/driver updates to no avail & I don't want to try enabling dma since it causes the machine not to boot so Im thinking it might be a hardware issue....
