Every time I boot 98, it updates config files

You know after you've made a serious change to the system, the next time you boot you get that updating configuration files message. Well, I'm dealing with this old laptop for a friend and it's doing that everytime it boots. Whether from a restart or a cold boot. I don't know what could be causing it. Any ideas anyone?

Try a boot into Safe Mode. That can clear a multitude of sins!

And while you're there run the scandisk, disk cleanup, and disk defrag utilities.

It's wonderful to have OS partition images. I'll bet he doesn't have any.

Look in device manager and see if something is not working for starters.

Two more things you could try:

1) See if Wininit.ini exists on the system (Start/Find-->Files)...if so, right-click-->Rename it to Wininit.old and reboot.

2) Delete the contents of the C:\Windows\Temp folder.

If those things don't fix it, try renaming the "C:\Windows\Winstart.bat" file...if you have one.

First reboot into Safe Mode and look at your device manager. Are there any devices that should no longer be there? (like different soundcards, video cards, nics, etc). You'll want to get rid of the old trash. In safe mode you should be able to see each and everyone of the old peripherals you have ever had. Don't be surprised if you find 5 different CDRom drives.

If you have changed video cards, you'll want to uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs. Run MSCONFIG to uncheck any associated systray apps. If you went from a dial up modem to a DSL or cable modem, get rid of any FAX software / apps. AND systray apps.

Check your registry for "runonce". This is the baby that is causing your problem. It never ran to completion and so is forever trying to install. It could be as simple as driver setup end (like Creative Soundblaster). On reboot it is looking for the Creative CD and, not finding it, will hang. What was the last piece of software which you installed? Did you run it from a CD?

Lastly make sure that you have the correct drivers for all your devices. Look at System Info and look for any red exclamation marks in your device manager.

good luck.
