HELP configuring Win98SE/WinXP - 3 ?'s

Hey, guys --

HAPPY NEW YEAR, y'all!

What's your recommendation on dual-boot setup:

1) Win98 SE/Win XP?

->Con's & pro's?

2) Can anyone come up w/a step-by-step procedure (for BOTH dual boot (XP+98SE)

AND

single-boot for WinXP?

Pls help!

(I've fdisk'ed Win98SE but never a WinXP machine... I've got Norton Ghost (on my PC#1; I've used it a bit in the past but don't necessarily remember it that well); + Partition Magic-8/PC Anywhere/LapLink (that I haven't ever used...);

After you're done w/Fdisk (in a 1-OS scenario), - do you just tell the machine to boot from the CD-ROM & stick the WINXP CD in & load the OS?
There're no Win98 SE setup floppys involved, right?

3) !!! PC#2 is a DELL PC. I might NOT be able to dig up DELL resource-CD w/drivers. How would I efficiently burn a copy of the CPU/mobo configuration-drivers for the install (+ monitor drivers/sound card, etc.) on my PC#1 (PC#2 has no burner), - to prepare for PC#2 setup?

PC#1 has a PROMISE card in it, so I can stick in a spare h/dr in it if need be. Should I install everything on it, inside my clean PC#1, maybe? Or just start messing w/PC#2 right away?

Pls gimme your professional walk-thru's!

--------

My PC#1 has a beautifully running Win 98SE. Never a single issue w/it. I'm very happy w/it!

&

PC#2 (the one in question w/WIN XP): ->is a horrificly rundown machine (it's slow as **** & the drive hasn't been cleaned for so long it's not even funny. So it's time for a fresh start.)

So, I need to either:

a) go for a dual boot on PC#2:
install Win98SE (should I put the image of my PC#1 on it? But the hardware is different, so it ain't gonna work?)+ do a clean install of WinXP

b) or just go w/a clean install of WinXP (there's nothing of importance that needs the bkup, so no need to image the current drive) (except for DELL drivers maybe?) LMK!

-------

Thanks a million for all the help!

WinXP will read fat32 so if you do dual boot go with straight fat32.

You didnt mention what speed box2 was so I can just tell you WinXP runs fine on my amd 700mhz 512mb. I bet WinXP will autodetect all the drivers if Win98 wont. With Win98 if you can get it connected to the net it shouldnt be any problem to download the needed drivers.

Dual Boot

Are you going to partition the hdd first as if you do then you can have win9x on C: and xp on D: and if you then format C: & D: fat 32 when you install xp on D: you can format as ntfs which makes it invisible to 98 but set up a common download folder so you can get files from xp to 98 this assumes the hdd is nice and big

1) i make two or more partitions with FDISK.

2) slap in win98 (this must be installed first) install on the first primary partition

3) slap in winXP and install, then all is done.

I've done this a bunch of time and have actually had a triple boot system.

1.) Use fdisk to partition for Win98
2.) Install Win98
3.) Restart and boot system with XP.
4.) Use partition program within XP to make second partition.

iIf you wish to triple boot just leave room for the last partition. Restart your system and boot with Linux.

All the latest OS have a partition program build in. Just remember about the File systems. Win98 can not read NTFS. XP can read Fat32 and NTFS. Mandrake can read both and Linux file systems.
