| Wow, it's been a very long time since I used Win95. Don't you think it is time to update to something more secure and modern? Anyway, if I recall correctly, 95 required drivers for optical drives. You might check the Samsung site for 95 drivers for that optical. I have no idea whether they have them or not. The other possible source for drivers is to google for it - IIRC the oak generic drivers were used in Win95 for most opticals run from one of the ini files. Someone correct me if my memory has failed, it's been a long time since I used that OS. The other possibility is the drive has simply failed. You could try to replace it, but I doubt that any new optical drives have Win95 drivers either. You may bee stuck beeweeeen a rock and a hard place at this point. |

| If you messed around with your autoexec.bat file when you made your fix, that could be your problem. There might be a copy of the olde AutoExec file and it might be AutoExec.old or some such thing. This could give you some guidance on getting the CD up and running again in this circumstance. It's been years since I updated my PD440FX from 3.1 to 95 and then on to 98... If you messed around inside your box... You probably have two IDE slots on the MB. If the CD is plugged into the same cable as the HDD, to be a slave, it must be on the end of the cord. If you plugged your CD into the second IDE slot and there is nothing else on the cable, then it should be plugged into the middle slot and you jumper should be set to master. Another thing to check is to be sure that you did not reverse the IDE cable. You want pin1 on the motherboard to match up with pin one on the CD in the event you have a cable that does not have a middle pin blocked out that would force you to insert the cable in only one direction |

which reminds me... there may be something u have to do in config.sys if i'm not mistaken.. sorry for all these vague answers but ... Win95!! ;-)Zeppelin is right.. and autoexec.old should exsist but best back it up too, if u decide to change/use it...

Egads - I can't even remember what went into the config.sys file. The only thing that comes to mind is that in some iteration of Windoze it became a blank file. And PC is right too, that HiMeM.SYS was interesting, was part of that in the config? Found a virgin copy of DOS 6.22 not too long ago, was hoping to find 6.21, but anyway, it was that wonderful deltree command. Yay! Sadly, on install it wants to take over the entire HDD. One of these days I'll clean out one of the boxes so it can install. Oh yeah, you can use a text editor to open the files from Windoze. | |
