junk or not?

my computer is really messed up. i have a win 98 se with a 8 gb HD and a 233 cpu. About 1/4th of my hard drive has stuff on it because i just did a clean install, but my computer is as slow a a snail. whenever i try to do a defrag, it stops at 10% and starts over again in a continuous loop. HELP! if you can, of course. i really need it faster. it takes 15 seconds to open internet explorer

Ctrl-Alt-Delete, end all not critical processes, then run defrag.

but imho - junk it.

update the chipset drivers.
enable DMA on your drives.

run defrag from safe mode if you have to.
run a thorough scandisk from DOS.

The only hope for a machine that old is an older distro of Linux. Maybe Suse 8.2? Not sure of the requirements on that.

The race for quality has no finish line- so technically, it's more like a death march.

I think Slackware 7.0 would be better.

When you have trouble defragging like your having something is working in the background interupting the process and its starting again the best thing is to start in safe mode because safe mode uses minimum system resources and you get a more complete defrag this way because files that are in use when you do it normally wont be defragged.

To start in safe mode tap F8 on and off while booting up when a selection comes up arrow key down to safe mode hit enter this selection will come up again dont do any thing here, just wait a minute, at the next prompt that says "Windows is running in safe mode" hit OK then defrag as you would normally restart as normal your desk top icons may have moved a bit because of screen resolution so drag and drop them back where you like them

Norton Antivirus will also disrupt the defragging process if you have auto-protect enabled. Make sure to disable it before running the defrag program.

I must get my 486 system with win3.1 to start folding. Which version of folding should I use? Will that version automatically upload the finished unit?
