Last paragraph on the statement is important as well.

Microsoft on Monday also said it decided to extended paid support for Window Millennium Edition until June 2006. Windows ME support had been scheduled to end Dec. 31, 2004.

That a rather interesting move. I guess with all the talk of company switching to linux and stuff.. Microsoft is trying to appeal to people are still using win98 on their work environment. Then again.. why would anyone use win98 in a work environment..

Because it works. Many companies even use DOS simply because everything continues to work. No need to spend more on a faster system if the current system is sufficient (and stable) for all the current needs.

Or maybe Longhorn is delayed beyond belief. If a new OS was going to be introduced, I would assume MS would shift the entire product support to incorporate the new one and throw out a couple of old ones instead of just appending support for the new OS onto the current batch of supported operating systems.

Just a thought I had.

And I just changed to XP about 2 weeks ago.
But, we still have 2 98'ers in the house, and, we just had a Critical Update this am that doesn't affect XP.
Work that one out?

Exactly. Our software is DOS and Netbeui based, runs excellent on 98se with few errors or crashes. It works on XP also, but it's a PIA to install because of the lack of support for Netbeui.

Sometimes change isn't necessary.

and of course MS only did this because they HAD to!! not out of their wicked kindness!!!!
One of the articles stated that MS had a survey done that said that of the w98 os population the largest group were Co & Corp and had no plans to convert.

Plus the fact that after w98 the life cycle of their product support went to 7 years. W98 is only 4+ yrs old. So there was a cry to bring it in to compliance . MS used that as a reason to extend support and save face.

       Win98 in a work environment.. NO NO NO NO... Win2k!!!!

I ran into that problem before with alot of my clients using win98, but I upgrade them all to win2k. More streamline and easier to secure.

Basically businesses are taking harder looks at the bottom line and finding it harder to justify a OS upgrade just because it is the "newest thing". Especially when what ever they are currently using is working for them, despite what others think of the OS in question. Many grocery stores are still using win95 because their register software is running ok and they see no need to change just for the sake of change. I am running win98se because it is what I have, it runs fine for me, and I cannot justify the cost of a new OS just because it is new......it is not that MS cannot support win98....it is that they want to push their newer and more expensive OS for purely profit reasons. I don't feel the need to increase MS's profits for no better reason that.."It is newer".

You know that I could rant right back at you for using Windows 2000 and say that you should have switched to Solaris.

Must be nice to have a rich company to work for.
