| Out of control dialup connection. Hi, after waiting some time for a nil response from the software vendor, I thought you good people might have some idea of a fix. Below is what I sent outlining the problem. Any suggestions?? My father-in-law received a trial copy of ZoomText 8.01 with Speech function. I installed it for him. Since this installation, at every boot, his modem wants to dial out. NOT ONLY THIS, right clicking on just about anything has the same result, most shortcut icons on the desktop, files within Windows Explorer etcetera. Also, double-clicking his desktop shortcut to a Word 2000 template starts up the dialup screen, taking three cancellations to get rid of it before one can get to Word. I made sure that all Automatic services were turned off and are manually executed. This trial version time span elapsed and he has ordered and received the full version of ZoomText 8.01 but minus the Speech function. Last night, first I uninstalled the trial version. Then I ran Norton WinDoctor and removed the twenty odd Registry entries left behind by the uninstall process. Re-booted and installed full version and activated the product. Still, this very annoying dialup problem. Then I went to your website, downloaded update version 8.04 and installed. Still, this very annoying dialup problem. My guess is that there is some odd registry entry remaining. What is yours? His system: OS: Windows ME - fully up to date CPU: AMD Thunderbird 1GHz RAM: 512 PC2100 Modem: 56k dialup

| One thing you might try. Open up the dial up connection properties. Write down all the settings. Then delete the dial up connection and also in network properties the tcp/ip protocol. Reboot. Then reinstall tcp/ip reboot, then restore the dial up connection. This will reset the tcp/ip stack and may clear up the problem. MAY, not will. Let us know how it works for you. |

| Dialup Have you installed a Norton product? I had the same problem. This fixed mine. Unchecking the box under securties was the problem. Check out my post in win98 title Dialup. Hope this helps. Clint Dial-up networking attempts repeatedly to connect during startup and shutdown after installing Norton AntiVirus Situation: You installed Norton AntiVirus (NAV) and may have run LiveUpdate. When you restart the computer, your dial-up connection repeatedly prompts you to connect to the Internet. This may also occur during shutdown. You must click Cancel repeatedly to stop the process. Sometimes you may need to connect briefly to the Internet to stop the process. Solution: This problem occurs on computers that connect to the Internet via modem (dial-up connection) when Internet Explorer is configured to "Dial whenever a network connection is not present." It can also be caused if the certain Internet Explorer security settings are enabled. To resolve the problem, try each solution in the order listed. To change the Internet Explorer connection option -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: Setting the connection option to "Never dial a connection" means that you will have to manually launch your dial-up connection when you want to connect to the Internet (by double-clicking the dial-up connection icon and then clicking Connect). Your computer will no longer automatically connect when you launch Internet enabled applications. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open Internet Explorer. Click Tools > Internet Options. When viewing the Internet Options window, click the Connections tab. Select Never dial a connection. Click Apply. Click OK to close the Internet Options window. If this does not fix the problem, then continue on to the next section. To clear the IE "Check for server certificate revocation" and "Check for Publisher's certificate revocation" check boxes Open Internet Explorer. Click Tools > Internet Options. Click the Advanced tab. Under Security, clear the "Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)" and "Check for Publisher's certificate revocation" check boxes. Click Apply > OK. Restart the computer when prompted. |

| Hi Bruiser & Clint. Thanks for the quick replies!! Clint - Yes NAV 2002 installed but well before problem which only occured after ZoomText installation. NAV & Windows configured to manually update. I will try your "Securities" fix first because it's easy but I feel it's not related. Bruiser - I think there is a real chance with this one and will try after Clints idea. Unfortunately, I live 50 miles away from "Dad" and wanted to arm myself with as many ideas before I return tomorrow night and try to get it sorted. In the meantime, if any more ideas, please keep them comming. I'll post results after done tomorrow night. Again, many thanks!! Dave.
