Unhappy Register Problems

Hi!!

first of all let me introduce myself since i am a new user here in this forum.I am a maltese student and currently i am studying electronics engeenering.i love computers and programming.

now my problem is that i have installed a program on my brother's laptop using windows XP.now he is going for a vagation and he is going to take his pc with him,so i am trying to install this pogram in my "old" pc using win98sec. when i am trying to enter the program's registery files in my pc the following error is being displayed:

"Cannot import (name of file).REG: The specified file is not a registery script. You can import only registery files.

i tried to search the net to solve my problem and found out that in order to solve the problem i must edit the registery files and write REGEDIT4 at the top of the program.i did what i have read and it was true, the error was eliminated and the regitery files went in my pc,but the problem is that the program didn't work it is still searching for its licence.

when tried again to install it in my friend's pc using winXP,no problems arised but on win98sec it isn't working.

Anyone can help me please??

Welcome to the zone!

Which program are you trying to install? You should be using the original install disc, not trying to copy a program from one pc to another.

Hi Boffin!

Thanks for replying, i really need help.

the reason i am not using the original cd is that i have lent it to one of my friends and he said he lost it (although i don't believe him).but the problem is not that i am not using the original cd because i have installed it on winXP without using the original cd.The problem is that the registors are not working on win98sec because of different registery format between those XP and 98sec.

can someone help me pls?

Hi tigrot you said it was looking for a licence so I presume It is not a free ware program. If we help you to copy the program from one PC to another that would be piracy and could get us into a lot of trouble, your best course of action is to get back your copy of your disk or buy another one.

It's not that we are trying to be mean or anything. You did buy the program, but legally its only allowed to be on YOUR PC when you buy it, not your brothers, your friend's, etc.....

If we helped you, this website could potentially be sued....it's legal reasons why. I hope you understand. You are still welcome at the forums.

I don't think there is an easy answer for this anyways. You are dealing with 2 different OS's registries.

You would have to have the program installed on both, and compare side by side in order for you to know what the solution would be.

There should be a legal way to transfer the the program with the help of the program's developer. Most programs which have license keys that compare the hardware against the license key do permit uninstalling it from one machine and installing it on another, depending on the license restrictions. What i would do is contact the program's developer, explain the situation and get their help.

The other issue is that the program may simply not work on Win98SE. There are many programs that are developed for NT based operating systems that won't work in 98 at all. This may be one of those situations.
