Rolling back Win98 SE? - Page 2

My Win98SE is a Compaq version that came with my computer. It is licensed. Compaq's setup put the OS on the harddrive. I just copied the setup folder to CD so I could use it for clean installs.

I wanted a regular copy of 98SE without all the Compaq proprietory stuff that is included in the windows\options\cabs folder. If I don't use it on my Compaq, it works fine EXCEPT on some types of passwords it won't save them. That's why I wanted a MS CD so I would have less junk and have a full functioning OS.

My local shop sells all LICENSED OS versions of MS. The Win98SE is $98! The owner didn't understand why. I didn't want to explain why I prefer 98 over XP. It's because of my hardware: sound card & RIO player I lose a lot of functions for the card and the MP3 player was the first one ever made and won't run on XP. Plus I got hacked thru XP with anonymous users.

I should have bought the MS CD know matter what anybody thinks! There, I have confessed the whole truth, again.

If you go to www.pricewatch.com and search on operating system and then win98se for $49 there. Valid licensed copies of retail packs of win98. There are licenses also availabe and manuals for a lot less.

You could also try Ebay but again better be careful. There are people who are trying to sell valid licensce copies but there are other that are not.
Hope I've been of some help.

I was on a team replacing all of 6000 pcs for a large inter state bank and have several compaq restore cds as well as some oem original win95 cds that were never used because we imaged all the machines with win98/se and all apps or NT4 at that time so the cds were going in the garbage can. We those who are aware retrieved a few for longevity. I use them for personal use and never have needed to call support for anything.

Yes, that does help! Like you said basically, the Compaq win98se is still a complete OS, just as fast as any. If it's used on a non-Compaq it goes to an "anyuser mode" and won't save certain passwords. At least that's been my experience using it. Plus it will not reinstall over IE6.
