Question Scandisk in win98se

Some time ago, I turned off the automatic running of Scandisk at bootup after an improper shutdown of win98. I preferred to run DiskDoctor. Well, I'm looking for that Scandisk switch and I can't find it. Does anyone remember where it is?

start->run->type msconfig and press enter.
On the general tab, select the advanced button.
Uncheck disable scandisk after bad shutdown

Thanks blt,

but it is unchecked.

It looks just like my other 98 box where I never "tweaked" the scandisk. The only difference I can add is: on this box I approved Norton Disk Doctor to replace scan disk when I installed NDD; on the other one I didn't. But I don't find any switches in scandisk or NDD similiar to the switch in msconfig. Nothing in TweakUI either.

Let me try checking it and booting a few times and then unchecking it.

'Autoscan=2' does it?

Msconfig will toggle autoscan between '1' and '0'. Where in TweakUI is a switch for this?

On my other win98 box where scandisk will trigger on bootup with a prior improper shutdown, msdos.sys has autoscan=1. There is another difference though, one has 'UninstallDir=C:\' and the other does not.

Autoscan=0 (never)
Autoscan=1 (after prompting)
Autoscan=2 (w/o prompting)

Unhappy

No luck.

I set it to 1. I set it to 2. I switched it with msconfig. I switched it with TweakUI. I switched it with a manual edit to the file. I shut down win98se from the desktop by pushing the power switch on the case.

Each time the computer would boot smoothly and "flawlessly" right into the win98se desktop. And then Norton Disk Doctor would catch the boot sector space error and fix it after I launch it.

What can I try next? Does the line 'UninstallDir=C:\' have anything to do with it? Why does one of my computers have this line in msdos.sys but not the other?

I have Norton SystemWorks Pro 2001 installed on both machines. But I do vaguely remember that during installation, Norton asks something about replacing Scandisk with DiskDoctor and I vaguely remember saying yes to one computer and no to the other. But I find nothing about this anywhere. Maybe it's buried deep in the registry. The only thing I can think of now is a re-install of SystemWorks, which I hate to think of doing because it's running smoothly and I know it could get corrupted if I fool with it. But that's what Ghost is for.

Am I missing something?

I would look for a way to disable NDD. Maybe a registry entry, config file, or Norton .ini file.

If you can wait, when I get home this evening, I will see if I can assist in finding the answer to this riddle. I have Systemworks 2001 Pro installed on two Win98SE machines. Scandisk works properly on both machines.

Try this:
Open Norton SystemWorks.
Select "Options" from the menubar.
Select "Norton SystemWorks"
See if NDD is checked under startup. If so, uncheck it.

I'll keep looking for other possibilities.

Thanks blt.

Under Options > Norton SW > Startup all boxes are not checked.

Under Options > Norton Utilities > General settings there is no check next to "Replace ScanDisk with Norton Disk Doctor". And under the startup tab there: All are blank.

Mine is exactly the same.

Search for the key: "SCANDISK FOR WINDOWS". What do you have there?
