| scandisk and winME - 48hrs later 48hrs later on a friend's computer, scandisk is still going though it is close to being finished. Unfortunately scandisk needs to finish before I can use the Defrag since I receive an error that scandisk needs to run complete test. And this is after disabling PCHealth, TaskMonitor, process system.ini file, process win.ini file, load startup group Though "HDD Regenerator" didn't find any bad blocks or any other problems, apparently scandisk is finding file problems for the time it is taking? There has got to be a better way to do this NOTE: format is out of the question since several programs can not be replaced/reloaded Any bright ideas or just let scandisk continue to run since it looks like it will be done in about 12hrs after already going 48hrs! -wayne

| Just how big is this disk drive? 300GB? You don't say what could have caused the problem in the first place. I would have re-installed WME over the old install. This would have kept the old registry settings and restored any system .dlls which may have been corrupted, like the chipset .infs. If it is that bad, you could have booted into Safe Mode and created a new directory and saved his data to it, possibly added a new HD and copied the files over.

| Drive manufacturers have pretty good disk utilities for their products. Something to look in to. 48 hours just doesn't sound right. Hope the defrag doesn't take that long too. ddd |

I would have prefered to format but as I said, she had programs installed but couldn't locate the CDs for me to do a complete re-install, with the problems I didn't want to take a chance of installing over the top. FYI, it was only a 40gig HD -wayne
