In my opinion, 98SE is by todays standards, an old and bad os. It doesnt support most of the newer games that are out, and hasnt supported Office 2003 (maybe even 2002, but i might be wrong there) ever. I can see why MS is killing it, it is 9 years old! In the car world, that would be like Ford supporting the Model T!

If someone is still using a Pentium 2 or earlier, they ought to think about using a new os for security purposes, let alone speed improvements. Since MS is a private company, they can kill their products whenever they want, and i personally support this. If you wonder why i didnt mention ME, its because that is the worst excuse for an OS i have ever used. I had it for about 2 weeks but it would blue screen on the most simple things and also was incredible slow. A P3 that is capable of running a pretty basic installation of Windows 2000 or Windows XP is under $100 around here, used. That is not that much when you consider that you can actually make use of the computer!

I run an old OS for older games etc. You don't need to keep security up to date unless you go online with it.

We still run one box on 98se. It is my ole CUSL2 - P3 800eb and 512Mb Crucial!
It's perfectly adequate for running my wifes business on - Accounts and Word Processing. We don't need the latest and fastest, nor do we need XP for that. 98se, Sage Accounts and Office 97 is good enough.
It all sits behind a hardware and software firewall and Avast antivirus. Acronis backs everything up daily to a slave USB drive on my XP Pro box.
When something breaks, as it will eventually, then we shall have to go to a new machine and XP (or whatever it is at the time). Until then we will keep this trusty servant running.

Yup, it's always the same story, no matter the date, and his system is an all times classic in my book as well.
