system resources reading??

Good evening

,

I came upon this forum this evening and decided to drop off a curiousity question. For the record I am running Win95a on a Packard Bell 4610 Legend, Pentium, 120 Mhz/72 RAM, with IE 5.01, Sp#1.

When I go to Device Manager>Systems>Performance it tells me the percentage of system resources that is free at that time.

When I click on CTRL-ALT-DEL it shows the following applications running (in the background I guess): This site, Explorer, Zone Alarm, Rnaapp, Avgcc32, Cookie, Point32, Systray and Minilog. Right now with these running it says I have 63% of my resources free.

Now here are three questions.

(1) With all these applications running is 60 - 66% free resources an average reading or should it be higher?

(2) Can I remove any of these applications from running in the background?

(3)How can I stop any of these applications from running in the background without removing them from my computer?

Also, for the record I have msconfig installed on my computer and the only items showing in my startup folder are (1) System tray, (2) Cookie Wall, (3) AVG (my anti-virus program), (4) Pointer (my Mouse), (5) True Vector (something to do with Zone Alarm) and (6) Zone Alarm itself.

None of the other applications showing when I use CTRL-ALT-DEL are shown in msconfig. Any ideas why not?

And, when I try to end task for them individually they are removed for a few minutes but then they return to the CTRL-ALT-DEL listing. Is that normal?

Any imput would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forums!

I use CodeStuff Starter to manage what starts up on my PC. Strange that you can't see it in msconfig.

You can also use "Tools" - "System Startup" in Spybot Search & Destroy (a very useful antispyware app if you don't already have it).

Of the processes you have listed, Explorer is required, ZoneAlarm is required, Rnaapp seems to be required, Avgcc32 is part of AVG antivirus and is required, Cookie looks to me like the "Cookie Wall" program you describe, Point32 is generally NOT REQUIRED unless you're using animated pointers (just eye candy, decreases performance for no good reason), Systray is required, and I believe Minilog forms part of AVG.

So I'm thinking you might only be able to eliminate Point32 and go with a plainer pointer if you want to increase system performance.

Thanks for the welcome and also for your prompt and very informative answer,

I do have Spybot S&D 1.3 installed and have seen the 'startup items' feature but never have paid any attention to it. Like you I think the program itself is great! I will check out the 'startup' feature and see what it is about.

Your description of my current applications was appreciated too. As for the 'minilog' entry I just discovered I can remove it temporarily by unchecking the 'log alert' option on Zone Alarm itself.

I will try unchecking 'Pointer' in MSConfig and see what happens.

Pnce again, I thank you for sharing some of your expertise with this 'balding' newbie.

You got me interested...

Do you know what the process Cookie is? Ive never seen it before but it looks suspicious. I took a guess and googled for cookie.exe and looks like a possible virus.

Minilog a LJ client? You prolly dont need that starting up unless you want it to.

If your connecting to the net through a modem you need Rnaapp, if not...can it...

If your looking to get a little extra performance out of that box ditch explorer and try a smaller shell such as litestep.

Hi specter and Fraoch,

Fraoch is right ... cookie is the program 'Cookie Wall' and I do use a modem for dialup so I guess I need 'rnaapp'.

I tried unchecking 'Pointer' but had to recheck it. Come to find out it is needed for the wheel on my mouse to function properly.
