I'll bet you're re-installing ME because problems were showing themselves in the previous installation, right. Were they the kinds of problems that seem intuitively to be assosciated with disk problems?

If you have a program like Partition Magic, try using it to look at the disk in question. Does it see it ok? Does it complain? Try using PM's built in "check for errors" capability; maybe it can fix what ails it.

If there's anything on the disk now, can you see it if you boot from a DOS floppy?

If there's nothing on the disk that needs to be saved, boot from a DOS floppy and use FDISK to delete and re-create the partition. Format it from DOS. If you can create and format the partition from DOS, I'm confifdent ME will play nice with it.

Is your bios settings set to allow booting from floppy or cdrom depending an what you want to boot up from?

Take a look at the hd with Partition Magic and see what you see. And tell us. We all want to know too.

yeah for some reason the windows me install disc didn't want to format, so after messing about searching the disc contents for format, i managed to format the C: drive.

That's easy - SUSE 9.1 or Red Hat Fedora 2. Actually it is a little more complicated...

well, ME does have a loader, you just can't see it (the usual io.sys, bios.sys, dos.sys type invisible files).

Grub will not have any problems installing and running with ME. It just will see it as "dos" and "linux" bootables.

What I was alluding to was whether or not you had the whole disk drive set up to use WME. If it is, then you will have to reclaim partition space. I don't know if Slackware has the re-partitioning utility that Red Hat has.

Besides Partition Magic, you could try PartEd http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/parted.html

also

http://paud.sourceforge.net/

If you left enough room on the disk before you installed ME you should not have any problems whatsoever. I had a W98SE / Slackware 9.0 hd working just fine.
