W98 stoped using the swap file

Title says it all. I have no idea why it happened. in my dual boot system, W2k still uses the swap file.
I have 512 mb ram.
Usually I see at least 10-15% usage of the swap file in W98, no its 0. The system feels slower that way.
Any ideas.

Try disableing it, then reboot and reinable it. With 512mb memory you should have no trouble booting without it.

Back to normal.
In my Win.ini file I had added the code for conservative usage of the swap file. I disabled it and now the swap file is beeing used again. Why it wouldn't use with it I don't know, but it did it before yesterday with the same settings.
Strange, but that's W98.

Do you let windows manage it or do you set your own? Do a find file for win386.swp and make sure the file is there. If windows manages it, it should be in c:\windows I believe, and if you set your own it should be where you set it to. You could also pull some ram and check system monitor to see if infact it is working or not. Or if you have Norton Utilities installed you can set System Doctor to monitor it. Maybe with 512mb ram it just isn't being used.

Conservitive usage forces the ram to do most of the work. Maybe with 512mb there was little call for swapfile usage.

You have the ram... use it!!!
Conservative swapfile is much faster as it forces use of all available ram first. I've been using it for months and can see the difference. Why let the hd churn when ya got ram to burn!

How is conservative swapfile enabled and is it possible with winME?
Sounds like it could be very beneficial.
thanks

Edit your system.ini file in the windows directory - under the [386Enh] heading
Add the line ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 This can significantly reduce
Virtual memory use as it makes Windows use (fast) RAM before the (slow)
Swapfile. This setting will tell Windows-ME not to use the swap file at all until
all of the RAM is used. After all of the RAM is used, the computer will push
most of the infrequently used data to the swap file. This is a great tweak. This is
particularly beneficial for those with 256MB RAM.

OR dl the latest version of Cacheman, it has a checkbox for conservative swapfile. Might as well tweak up your cache settings while you are at it.

Thanks Cy for that information. I already tweaked using it, and will continue to monitor how well it works.
