If so, connect the 40GB as a slave to the orig. 4GB drive and see if the bios recognizes the entire 40GB. If the drive is properly recognized, use Maxtor's Maxblast software to clone the orig. drive to the new drive. Then replace the orig. drive with the new drive (don't forget to set the drive as master). Win98SE won't be the problem. I'm using a 40GB Maxtor under Win98SE. If the bios won't recognize the drive, you can use a PCI IDE controller card to get around the limitation.

| Thanks Perry ... I've been using maxblast to zero fill but I didn't know about this option. Hi BLT, replacing the 4 gig drive would be best. If it doesn't see it maybe I could make two partitions of 20 gig each and just use the first. Then it should work right ?

| MaxBlast 3 will probably let you format the entire 40GB drive as one partition as a single master or a slave to the 4 gigger you already have on that system... it's an awesome utility for enabling older systems to use newer drives.

EDIT: Been a while since I've used Maxblast 3, but I think you may be able to create the partitions using the Maxblast software. Check the documentation on this matter.

| Hmmm thanks guys. Maybe it would be better to use maxblast and format this 40 gig in one partition fat32. This way I could remove the drive and use it on another win98 system or even an xp system if need be and my system would still have it's OS on the 4 gig hdd.

| Depends on your purpose. Assuming the bios recognizes the 40GB drive properly, the Maxblast software will allow you to "clone" the 4GB drive to the 40GB drive eliminating the need to reinstall the OS or any software. The 40GB drive will contain all info on the orig. drive plus a 36GB of extra space. I would think if you were to use the drive in an XP system you would want to format it as NTFS. |

| If your Compaq doesn't recognize your 40 GB HD, just pick up a Promise Ultra133 TX2 controller card for about $36 and pop it into a spare PCI slot. That card will support four HDs of any size, gives you ATA133, which is what your Maxtor is if it's a recent purchase. The promise will identify the drive as 'Ultra DMA 6' during boot if it's ATA133 or 'Ultra DMA 5' it it's ATA100. BTW, you can format just about any HD to FAT32 using the original Win98 SE Startup Disk (no large HD support patch required). Just do the Fdisk and then the format. It looks like there is something wrong when formatting drives over 68 GB, but there isn't. It simply subtracts 68 GB from the size of the HD, but when finished it will show the correct size. For example, if you are formatting an 80 GB HD, it says that it's formatting a 12 GB HD. When finished, however, you will see that you have a FAT32 formatted 80 GB HD. You won't have any problem, or notice anything unusual formatting a 40 GB HD. It's not the OS but the motherboard (BIOS) that determines how large a HD you can use. If your Campaq doesn't recognize the full 40 GB, the Promise Ultra133 TX2 will get you around that problem quite nicely.

| Will the Promise Ultra 133 TX2 run a WD 250 Gig drive in a win98se system? I ran my WD 250 on the IDE channel of my win98se system successfully, but there are too many precautionary things one has to do to avoid corrupting the data over the 137 Gig line on a win98se system. ![]() __________________ Chat with the ABXBuds at the #ABxZone channel on EFnet Internet Relay Chat If you don't have it then download mIRC from www.mIRC.com |

That answers my question when I can across this: ___ The following information about the capacities of the two file systems is taken from the Windows Network & .NET Magazine site: FAT32 (Win9X or newer): * Maximum disk size: 2 terabytes * Maximum single file size: 4 gigabytes * Maximum files per folder: 65,534 (Note: using Long File Names will reduce this number - the more LFN files you have, the fewer you can have) NTFS (WinNT, 2K, XP, servers): * Maximum disk size: 256 terabytes * Maximum single file size: size of disk * Maximum files per folder: 4,294,967,295 ___ ![]() __________________ Chat with the ABXBuds at the #ABxZone channel on EFnet Internet Relay Chat If you don't have it then download mIRC from www.mIRC.com
