It's not only the OS but also the motherboards BIOS that limits hard drive sizes... all the barriers are listed here:

32gb is the FAT32 partition limit.

it can go higher, but itll use 32kb clusters (ok for a storage drive, but sux for an OS drive)

under 8gb partition = 4kb clusters
under 16gb partition = 8kb clusters
under 32gb partition = 16kb clusters
over 32gb partition = 32kb clusters

Not if you use fdisk to partition and format with a 98SE bootdisk first...

I noticed in the hdd properties that it has Int13h checked.
This system has a 4 gig hdd and DMA was not checked so I did.

I am thinking of adding a 40gig hdd ... will this work ?
I installed True Image 7 already and it has a feature to prepare a new hdd.
I have never tried this but what the hey

Any pointers ?

FAT32 actually allows a hard disk of up to 2 terabytes to be formatted as a single drive. No BIOS or OS has support for this yet and probably never will...

It would take a month to format 2 TB!!!

yamawho,

When you say "this system", what system are you referring to? More than likely a 40GB would be easily partitioned and formatted as a single drive if the system BIOS and motherboard were released after early 1999.

Make sure the win98se boot disk used to fdisk the drive has the large drive support update (drives over 64 gigs) I use the modified boot disk on all fat32 drives.
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;263044
If I remember correctly you have to manually copy several files from 98se to a 98se boot disk after installing the update to 98se. As 98se will not create an updated boot disk even though the os was patched. I could not find any info at MS. I do have winimage boot disk creator that makes a 98se boot disk with large drive support. If anyone needs or wants it PM me or I can try to post it here.

98 and 98se large drive support (over 32 gigs) with old phoenix bios.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/d...de/Default.asp

FYI XP can only format fat32 up to 32gig partitions but can read/write to larger fat partitions.

This system is a Compaq Deskpro 6300 series built in 1998.
P2 350 mhz, 128 mg pc100 ram, Intel chipset (haven't looked which yet) and Matrox G200 AGP video card 8mg, hdd 4gig.

I wanted to change the hdd but then I remembered Compaq's don't allow you to change the hdd. It least my last one didn't, this one doesn't have a svae partition so you never know.

I might need to keep the original hdd for the OS and the use the 40 gig as slave. Can I use True Image 7 prepare new drive ?

Don't know about the month, but I recently purchased a 250 gigabyte Lacie external drive which came formated FAT32.

So at least 250 gigabytes IS supported by FAT32 (I reformatted the drive to NTFS, however)

With a system that old yamawho you will probably have to partition the drive in half unless there is a BIOS update available from Compaq (Highly unlikely!) or if you use a software utility from the HDD manufacturer to overcome the size limit. They usually install a drive "overlay" to fool the BIOS since it can't intepret the drive's parameters. What brand is it?
