Us, dyed in the wool, 98'ers would have had no trouble at all!
I can still remember all the protocols and settings needed to network 98SE machines Only problems i have with XP is it keeps popping up password requests on machines without passwords!! if only XP would allow me to set up things how i want and then allow them to stay that way!....Anyone struggling with 98SE should be made to network on WFWG 3.1 to let them know how much they are missing lol

It's even getting worst, Little Bear will play on XP Pro but every once and a while it simply stops working whereas currently I get no sound from the game on my w98se box. Peter Rabbit, 100% no-go on WXP (even at Windows 95 settings), works flawlessly with w98se.

And then here's a real kicker for me. Testing of business applications. I was shocked to see that I have a customer at work that is still on Windows 98 with Office 2000 running on it. So, now I use my w98se installation at home for testing purposes as well.

However, I'm not a die hard 98er but I do want to live without dealing with the sadness of my kids' faces by me telling them that Uncle Bill says no-no to your games.

Bad Uncle Bill !!!

There is one thing I do like that I wish win98se had. I like the "open with" option when you right click on a file in win2000. Is there some way to add that to a win98se right click menu?

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

I knew there had to be a catch!

I see the 'other' button on the 'open with' list and I can browse to the program I want to use. But the program I want to use won't register and stay in the main list. I have to browse for it each time.

But, that also happens in XP!

I find there is one file type (that I rarely come across) that you cannot set the default for.
I'll post it when I come across it again!

Yep! That happened to me too. I don't remember the file type but it wasn't in the list of file types to set. But I think the native program still ran it. You just can't change to another program.

in Win98 programs control the file types.
if a certain file type keeps reverting back to a certain program, youll need to release that file type from the program.
mozilla, mediaplayer, and netscape are known for this.

you can always use the "send to" option.
paste a shortcut in your send to folder of the program(s) you want. then just right click whatever file and choose "send to" to open it in whatever program you want.

I was given a Compaq Deskpro with has a P2 350mhz cpu, 128 ram pc100 and a Matrox G200 video card 8mg. I've been playing with it all evening added a burner and a 2nd hdd. This system is running win98se and plays nice on the home network. Installed ZA and True Image 7. Made an image and verified it ... OK but I get a error when I try to make a rescue cd ...

Can I use a True Image 7 rescue cd made on an XP system ?

I am shocked how fast this system runs. Burned afew cds, did some surfing unzipped afew files ... seems just as fast as my 2.4 Ghz P4 work system

I have an old AMD 450 mhz system with 64 mg of pc100 ram and it's very slow. Why is the other system so fast ?

You know, I found the same thing. I had a 400 MHz AMD K6-2 and my brother's 500 MHz PII-based Celeron walks all over it! Even the junk P166 computer a neighbor was throwing out seems to run Win98SE faster.

I also could never get my old AMD system to burn a cd ...
It has a SIS chipset, the faster one is an Intel chipset.

Same here, my old system used an SiS 530 chipset. The board was an ASUS P5-99VM.

My brother's PC was purchased at almost the same time mine was and cost about the same yet it's still going strong while I've retired mine. I'd reuse it for something if I had a spare ATX case/PS.

I don't think you can make a bootable rescue disk, although I haven't really tried. http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/ doesn't list a W98SE bootable image.

The one thing I loved in W98Se was the ability to add the backup program to it.
I would use the backup program to make an 'image' and then burn that.

If it ever fubar'ed I would wipe it, install the very minimum but making sure that I installed the backup feature, then I would just restore everything. Then I would 'restore' my incremental data.

W98ME had the 'system restore' feature but it didn't have the backup feature.

The W98SE system is probably faster because it doesn't use VIA chipsets which have low memory throughput.
