Windows 98SE was a great OS. When I first started building and was terribly disgusted by the BS of XP (all the unnecessary stuff), I kept with 98SE. I could get into Windows on a fresh install in under 8-10 seconds on a Willamette 1.5 P4.

Briton,

That reminds me of my Mac SE running OS6. It could boot and open a Word blank page in 3 - 5 seconds.

I remember that my 3dmark2001 score decreased about 600 points when i switched from win98se to winxp pro. Anyone experienced the same ?

The only thing why i stayed with xp was the faster networking, 100Mbit stream would consume ~100% cpu load in win98se, and because i often have to move data amounts >10GB I had to admit that XP was the better solution for me, as much as it hurt to give up my perfectly configured, rock stable win98, for some product activation, spyware loaded and bug crawling piece of junk

Product Activation will eventually bite anyone and everyone who owns software with it.

First example is DVDXCopy. Now that there is no more company for this $100 product, as soon as you need to reinstall it on your next new computer - guess what - you are out of luck.

I am not going to even start on when Microsoft will decide no more activation for XP (we don't support it anymore, buy LongHorn, it's only $299 per copy ).

their standard "lifecycle" for a product is 7 years as far as i remember, there has also been a test some time ago "May we ask your for your registration" or the like, which was a test run and maybe becomes standard for downloading microsoft stuff. If that happens they can immediately turn down an OS 7 years after release. (You can crack the windows product activation, so it would be "possible" to run it even if they didn't allow you to activate it anymore).

btw. WPA was THE thing that annoyed me with WinXP

It annoyed me too and still annoys me.

The seven year thing is wrong !!! If it were true then Microsoft would still be giving support for win98se if I called them !!!

win98 was supposed to run out of support a long time ago, because when win98se was released, their standard lifecycle was 4 or 5 years (I don't remember exactly), but because a lot of companies in developing countries are still using win98, they decided to extend the support till 2006

check out:

MS extends support for win98 till 2006

if they don't give you any support you can tell them to check out their own announcements....

Thanks Columbo. That's good to know. But the "support" is very limited it seems.

If you go to the ATI website to get the current win98 or winMe drivers for any ATI product, you will see that ATI stopped developing them in March 2004 because Micriosoft will not certify the drivers for win98se or winMe !!! And since ATI will only issue certified drivers, their support for win98se and winMe (due to M$ lack of support) no longer exists. It's not ATI's fault. They would issue new drivers for win98se but can't get support from M$.

No current certified drivers for win98 or winMe
