Question Win me shutdown vxd --- error

I keep getting the bsod when shutting down with the
error "vxd ---" has caused an error in blah blah........

what the heck is vxd ---

I got this error before when I installed my cd writer fixed that by switching the cdrom to slave and the writer to master.

now the error comes up after installing visual studio ??????
the only way to get by without the BSOD it is to use selective startup and turn of damn near everything

CUSL2C PIII 933/no oc
512 MB RAM
sb live lpt sharing checked
ATI Radeon 64DDR W VIVO
HP 16x12x40 cdwriter
32x cdrom
30GB WD HD ata100

any ideas on how or where to start?

Vxd = virtual device driver

One of your programs or devices is loading a driver that is causing a conflict. When you used "selective startup" and turned everything off, you stopped the driver from being loaded. It is normally loaded from one of the files that you disabled. You can enable those files one by one until the BSOD returns to determine which file is loading the suspect driver.

However, the first thing I would try would be to update all device drivers.

If updating drivers doesn't fix problem, post back with the EXACT error message. May be able to track down the problem from the error message.

Another possible solution is one that I read in the Practical Windows mag. In the bios: disable PnP OS (set to: no). Supposedly, pnp set to yes, causes intermittent (scrabble word)shut-down problems. Its worth a try. My sys boots and shuts down fine with either the yes or no (current) setting.
