Skull, thank you for the replies. I took the long weekend off so when I get home tonight I will try your suggestions. I am not trying to overclock and I have tried to set manually before but have not tried checking the power supply or temperature. I will let you know.

Success, hopefully

Skull, I got a new case with a 300w power supply, reformatted and installed Win98se. Then started installing cards and programs. It has been two days now and the computer seems to be fine! I keep going into the BIOS and checking the cpu temperature and it is from 100 to 104.5 f. I am cautiously optimistic as it did work the first three weeks I had it. I can't tell you how greatful I am as two shops and two "experts" couldn't figure it out. Have a great day!

Congrats Pipercub,

I'd like to ask you, what was the wattage rating of the old power supply?

Did the voltages in Hardware monitor show low voltages with the old supply?

Just wondering if there are cases where normal voltage readings are present in BIOS, but still can have bad PSU.

Would be good to know for all us "techies"

Hey pipercub, Thats GREAT! I'm glad, reading your post gave me a nice shot in the arm! This is what it's all about helping one another. Those temps look good. You have a nice one too!

Watts and Volts

Skull and Stev-rey, I turned the computer on this morning and it is still working! It will take awhile before I'm convinced though the pesemist I am. Again thanks! As far as the watts of the other case it was 250. I don't know how to check that in the BIOS but the cpu was 800 and the voltage was 1.7 if this helps. I just took Skull's advice and got a new one. If I can check out the old case with a volt meter I could plug it in and do that some how.

I can get through setup with w/98 or win me but as soon as I load drivers for linksys nic, machine locks. Reboot, gets almost to desktop and stops loading. Grey screen, mouse not locked, hit ctrl+alt+del and close program box comes up but there is nothin listed in box. Not even windows or systray.

W2k install ok, drivers, update, etc. all run without a hitch. Display flickers though. When playing UT or othes like it, screen will randomly freeze for about 2-3 seconds. running HDTach shows a repetitive, sharp downward spike across the whole test. Tried with and without Intel's ata100 driver.

I've tried swapping other hardware to no avail. I'd begun to beleive it was mobo. Perhaps it is.

pstroke, try loading Linkys drivers in safe mode, Copy drivers to my documents, then install in the safe mode. Also, is your bios up-dated to the 1006 final? It would help to have your specs!

Also, there have been known issues with NIC and Video Cards on shared slots.
If they are shared, and I'm guessing they are due to the fact you are having glitches with both video and NIC if you have a PCI vid card, you might want to put them in a different slot.

If you do so, first go into Device manager and remove the devices from the list. Shut down, switch cards around and boot.

Windows should detect and install drivers.

Edit:

I just reread this thread...

Win2k and games?

Win2k is designed for business applications and do not work well with playing games IMHO.

Might want to consider Win ME.

Better yet, Windows 98SE, as a lot of people are finding Win ME buggy.

I antipicate there will be an updated version of Win Me in the near future pretty much like the move from Windows 95b to Windows 95c ( or was it 95 to 95b?, I dont remember...)

pstroke, did you check for IRQ conflicts? Memory what brand? This board likes quality RAM like Mushkin and a few others.
