You have a defective board! There were a number of people with this problem. I took mine back for a replacement. I now am able to load any OS without a problem.

Stev-rey, It does sound like a defective board. Would you believe I've had two defective boards. First one was the problem your having, second board had a short in the cpu socket. Sometimes the cpu would fire-up other times it wouldn't! Good ole Asus mobo's.....LOL.
Did get them both exchanged without a problem.

Thanks Skull,

I'm gonna see retailer about exchange policy today, was up half the night trying different install approaches and quadruple checked Bios settings.

I found it Odd Onboard VGA was enabled by default when CUSL2-c has no onboard video. I thought that was the problem... no dice. I have left it disabled for the meantime.

C ya.

hmmmm.. I wonder if i got a defective board, How long does Asus take to RMA, because I doubt if http://www.peachpc.com where I bought it from would take it back.

Exclamation Win 98/WinME Install problems survey

Sorry for the length of this post.

Hello,

I too have the same problem with my motherboard (CUSL2-C). When installing the setup hangs at "Configuring Plug and Play Devices".

I beleive (with out a doubt) that the problem is with the implementation of ACPI BIOS.

I was able to work around the problem by using "setup /p i". This switch disables ACPI, and the install works fine. I also looked at detection log and see that ACPI was the last thing setup tried to detect. Pretty clear to me.

What is strange with this problem is that this doesn't happen to all users. Before the forums were changed there were atleast 6-12 different cases of this happening. I don't know if there is a run of defective boards or a glitch with this hardware revision (1.02).

What I need to do is document as many people having this problem as possible. The reason for doing this is becuase my department may be looking at purchasing several systems based on this motherboard. I want to pass this info on to our reseller so they can look into the problem and maybe avert us for making a mistake.

So what I ask is that anyone who has or has had this problem post in the forum or send me email with as many details about your problems and work arounds and possible solutions you may have found.

I have been into contact with ASUS tech support, and while they answer fairly quickly they have stopped replying to my email. Maybe if I show my reseller that there is a problem they may be able to get some answers from ASUS, as they have better relationship with ASUS than any of us would.

I assure you that I will post my findings good or bad back here.

Thank you for your time.

Update:

It was indeed defective motherboard, retailer was good about it too, he ran setup and saw the effects.

Then took motherboard out and swapped another one in.

Setup picked up where it left off and finished, did not need to Format C: first and rerun setup.

One happy customer

Possible Bad Mobo?

Skull, you were quite certain tha stev-rey had a bad mobo. Maybe you could tell me if mine is bad. After running the computer for an hour or two it shuts down and trys to reboot. If it does reboot it goes to the BIOS Advanced screen and says in red I have the improper Mhz selected for my cpu (I have a Pentium 800) and the improper voltage selected. The cpu has 1.7 v stamped on it and the screen says 1.7 is selected. I.ve tried manual also. If I turn the computer off and try to turn it back on nothing happens except the coolong fan runs. The next day I can turn it on and it will, most of the time go through the same senario. Win 98SE is the operating system.
Thanks!

Have you tried to set the CPU manually, in the bios to the correct speed and default Vcore? What is your temps @ idle and @load? If your temps are ok and you have set the bios manually to the correct CPU settings and Vcore at default then I'd have to say you also have a defective board and to try an return it!!

pipercub, I'm assuming that this is not an overclocked board. If your having these problems while oc'ering, then thats a whole different ball game!
