win98 installation probs ! I am really a newbie as concerns s/w so i need some help with win98. I installed it after assembling my pc yday, and i let the setup cd handle the partition & auto-install on a single drive(C). I then installed my ethernet card(kingston) for dsl, it has an installation disk but still needs some win98 CD. The problem is it couldn't find a number of files even from win98 cd. Now, when i reboot, the boot process complains about the following missing files: ventsup.vxd, vredir.vxd & dps.vxd. I also get a message saying" unable to load msnp32.dll". The PC does boot normally if i continue(enter) with the process. I tried re-installing twice again(the ethernet card i.e) but still doesn't help. Is this a problem with win98 installation ? What should i do ? Also, when i look at the devices manager list, the PCI System Management bus always shows up to be missing driver files ( with a yellow "?"). Why aren't the drivers found from win98 ? Any help would be appreciated. Regarded Ferrisb

Did you install the chipset drivers for the motherboard? You don't say. Should have been next thing installed after the OS. If the chipset drivers were installed, I would try reinstalling the NIC again. Be sure you remove the drivers that have been installed. When prompted for the Win98 CD during installation, make sure you point the install program the Win98 directory on the CD not not just the CD.

:o I forgot to install the mobo drivers which i proceeded to do so, yesterday. Now, the PCI sys mgmt problem is gone. But i still have the missing files(vnet ect.) turning up on reboot. As u said, i'll try removing & reinstalling the ethernet card. If the problem persists, what should i do ? The complete path to the install dir would be d:\win98 or any other subdirectory below that level ? Thanks Ferrisb

Yes, the complete path is d:\win98, assuming your cdr is drive d. If prompted for the Windows cd, point the install program to that directory. If files are still missing after the install, you can extract them from the .cab files in the same directory of the Windows cd using the Windows System File Checker. To locate the File Checker go: start\programs\accessories\system tools\system information\tools menu\system file checker.

I tried re-installing it coupla times but it din't help so i finally searched on google. Turns out these missing files are a common problem in win98 with MS home networking. The files are corrupted if setup is stopped midway. Anyways, i was able to extract them from the cd & i had to reinstall MS networking. thanks for the tips. ferrisb

Glad to see you solved it. For other users, many times Win98 asks for some missing files and prompts you to put your Win98 CD. Except of extracting from .cab files you can do it in other way. Even if you select the correct drive letter,eg D:\ where D is the CDROM that Win98 CD inserted, the files won`t be found.Operating system can`t find them. You have to manually browse the CD and select every folder/subfolder on win98 folder, until the missing file is displayed/found.
