It is not a barrier as in not capable, it has to do with the behavior of vcache and mapped RAM. I hate to say it, but you should seriously stick to an operating system that can map and manage the memory array correctly. Windows 9x can mapped a full 4GB array but due to certain mapped areas and vcache's management of the array, it will have issues such as the infamous cannot use more than 512MB issue. This specific problem, many have given incorrect information about. The link provided will clarify the issue. Disabling certain BIOS options can also help if permitted in the setup and should be if using Windows 9x, but not if using XP. Honestly, dual booting is your prerogative, but Windows XP is more robust and capable of handling your newer systems resources correctly. Using PCIExpress should not exacerbate the issue as how AGP's GART mapped area does with vcache. Unless it is a hyper memory like video card, then you will experience the very issue such as with AGP's GART and Windows 9x.

why keep suggesting xp?? you all know i have and use it...
as for the mskb link, i used it before... neither solution is any good SINCE the error comes up during the install phase after the 1st reboot. unless i'm not doing something right ??? i CAN modify the system.ini at that stage (after another reboot and press F8 and go to command prompt) but it made no difference.

i may read into if i can do the following:
make emm386 in autoexec.bat restrict the amount of ram used by the system under win98.
let it only see/use 512mb (that will be enough for win98 by far)

I did not “suggest”Windows XP. Read my post again, and you will see that I said Windows 9x has intrinsic characteristics that prevent you from utilizing your system correctly. Also note, my statement about your prerogative and dual boot.

You want to solve the issue, that is typical with us [humans] and problems. Although, it is possible to work around such, your system would not be utilized properly and may experience erratic behavior due to such intrinsic faults of Windows 9x afterwards, even if configured for prevention.

The link was to fortify the fact that you will have an issue with an operating system that cannot map the memory array and manage it properly for your installation, and usage.

I also was running W98SE with 1G of ram. When I upgraded to 2GB I was no longer able to run it. So it got pushed back to my other system which only has 512MB of RDRAM.
