| Windows 98 Install Procedure Hello, After reading Mr. Stevo's installation guide for Windows XP, I attempted to follow it for an install on an older system with Window 98. The original hard drive died two days ago and I replaced it with a Seagate ATA 7200RPM 80 gig hard drive. Oh, and the Dell tech told me all I needed with this system was the native windows chipset drivers. Is that correct? I have a Windows 98 disk and Windows 98 second edition on another disk. The computer is a Dell from early 1999; a Pentium II, with 128megs of ram. Right now it's working, except for a conflict with the sound card and the new Ethernet card that prevented me from signing on AOL. I have plans to get a new sound card to resolve that issue. Following Mr. Stevo's guide, I figure I should unplug everything except the keyboard and mouse and then install Windows 98, then install the chipset drivers from the Dell website, then install the Ethernet card, then install AOL, then log online and get all of the windows non-driver updates. Then I should install Windows 98 second edition? Followed by the Video Drivers, Sound drivers, and programs? Is this procedure correct? So far I have no sound card, but I have installed Disk utilities, Word, Excel, McAfee, and such. I have NOT yet installed Windows 98SE because it is on a separate disk titled "Second Edition Upgrade." Is it advisable to just purchase and add a sound card? Have I messed up stuff enough to warrant a reinstall? Thanks for taking the time to read my post. I will look forward to the replies.

| I think you have a good game plan going. I'd fix that conflict first before moving on. Also you may want to install an anti-virus program first before connecting. Perhaps download the updates from another computer and burn to a cd also... it's been awhile since I messed with 98 though.
