| W98SE had USB support. W98FE (First Edition) did not and could not. If you have SATA you will need to download their W98SE drivers (it's out on the net somewhere). W98Se formatted with 4kb size blocks, WME formatted with 32kb blocks. Seemingly, WME would be better for video and music. What is the block size for WXP? I believe you can set it to 4 - 32kb, depending on the HD format program. I keep it at 4kb for faster response and defrag'ing. I formatted my HD for WME (32kb) but installed W98SE instead. I really didn't notice any difference. As to the "recovery" feature - I liked the backup feature in W98SE more. Put two partitions on the drive and do a full backup to it. Or install everything (patches, security updates, drivers, etc., then burn it onto a DVD using the backup program. If it ever crashes, do a minimal install (just install backup) then restore. If you can find someone with a W98SE CD you can buy a W98SE license for $14 at www.pricewatch.com . An update CD is $44. A retail CD & License (COA) is $54. .

| Sorry but Win98 does support USB in the first edition, I know because I ran it for years with nothing but updates. Win98SE added WDM support as earlier posted and some slight memory handling improvements over the first version. http://www.usbman.com/Guides/overvie...b_in_win98.htm I also fall into the group of folks that ran WinME without any problems, in fact I still run it on one of my old rigs just because...of course upon a clean install I tweaked the cache sizes, the page file and disabled SR so that probably had a lot to do with my trouble free experience with ME. I would still recommend moving to XP though instead of using an old 9X kernel version of Windows just because of the NTFS file system and the greatly increased file size handling of the XP kernel. 9X Windows lacks support for file sizes above 4gig which is a royal pain in the *** when trying to work with video of any sort. Also I can honestly say I have never had a crash caused by WinXP. As far as privacy and the need to register WinXP, yeah I think its bogus but you have to realize the model for doing business has changed and you no longer buy the software, just a license to use it. If it really bothers you I would suggest ManDrake Linux, I also use that and find it to be outstanding for anything but gaming....mostly due to the limited number of games available, though it does seem to be getting better. |

| It's not clear from the original message if you intend to run the O/S on your hardware as listed in your signature - from which I see you have 1Gb RAM listed. From memory I think Win98 had an upper limit of 128MB of memory which it could address directly and I think this carried over to SE. I run a small home network with six PC's on it with a mixture of Win98SE and Windows 2000Pro machines. The kids use the 98SE machines to play games on and they take everything that gets thrown at them in their stride. The only issue I have is that Microsoft stopped supporting 98 a long time ago and 98SE updates tend to appear only once or twice a year now - usually when another major security patch is needed. The machines I have with 256MB RAM or more are the ones that run 2000Pro and they run games too just fine - unless you happen to like playing some of the older games from the early and mid 90's in which case Win98SE is probably your best bet, especially as you can still boot directly back into DOS. Now there's a REAL operating system.....

| 512 is the win98 limit. I run a gig of RAM on my win98se P4 machine with the necessary edits for it. It runs fine. ![]() __________________ Chat with the ABXBuds at the #ABxZone channel on EFnet Internet Relay Chat If you don't have it then download mIRC from www.mIRC.com |

| I'd say 100%. I just tried it. Setting the vcache and swap to 2G or 0 bought me nothing. So I guess it's time to move W98Se over to my other machine; a GF3 should be good enough for most old games. Good thing I only play one game at a time under W98SE and always backup my game saves to floppy. I hate moving Ubuntu over, though. Looks like either I buy another HD or I just do without W98SE. nah... I'll figure something out.
