Windows ME will not boot

I downloaded DirectX 9b on my daughters ME system so she could play a game. However, when download was complete the computer started to re-boot but stopped at the windows ME picture. It will not reboot.
Anyone have any idea what went wrong or how to fix this.
I was running DirectX 8 fine.

ASUS TUSL2-C
P3 800mhz
Bios1012tc
Memory 512
OS ME

Perhaps 3 or 4 years ago I had problems upgrading to a newer version of DirectX while using Windows Me. Although I could list the many things I tried, the only thing that ended up working was a reinstall of Windows Me. In my case, I did not lose any files, since the reinstall only copied over the existing files, of which I assume some had become corrupted. The reinstall went well, and the upgraded DirectX (I forgot the version) installed and operated properly after that. If you do not get a better suggestion and want to try this, first back up all files since you may lose them in the process. Good luck.

Bummer that the "easier" fix did not work. Sorry you had to put up with the hassle of a reformat. At least things are running OK now, and I hope they continue to do so.
