| Got the Windows security update CD today. While it worked fine for my Windows XP machine, I am NOT pleased with what it did to my Windows 98 SE machine!! It started with trying to install IE 6. I've run IE 6 on Win98SE before and it runs like a broken-down donkey cart. I've avoided upgrading from IE 5 so far. On the install dialog box, the "Cancel" button was greyed out. I ejected the CD but the installation kept running! In desperation, I hit the reset button. I was afraid my installation was hosed after it came back up. Sure enough, the install CD had placed an INF file in the registry startup list. However, after displaying an error message, it still started up. I used CodeStuff Starter to locate and delete the offending entry. Everything seems OK now and IE 5 still runs, but what a pain! Just be warned! P.S. I don't think I needed any updates anyway. The Windows Update site just indicates IE 6 as the only thing it wants to install.

| Thank you for the warning. I typically do not trust Microsoft or Symantec CDs for that reason--they seem to have a mind of their own. That is one reason I like Windows Me--the restore function can help in situations like this. (XP has an even better version, but my religion prevents me from saying nice things about Windows XP. |

| thx for the heads up you are correct ~ the best way to run Win9x is w/o the IE6 update. the (online) security patches dont seem to cause me any probs (like IE6 does).

| FWIW Here's my 2 cents: Many years ago, when Outlook express first came out, I made the mistake of seeing what it was all about - it hosed my Netscrape and took over a bunch of other stuff that took quite a while to straighten out. Subsequently all my Windozes boxes run Netscape along with all my Macs prior to OS X. Netscape comes with a 'built in' mail application and I am well pleased with it. At the rare times when I encounter a site requires IE, I pass on the site as there are a lot of other sites out there that don't have web desiner weenies who push the IE only button when creating a site. BTW, thanks for the heads up. Just ran the update CD on two XP boxes to no ill effect and was going to work my way down the line to the 98 box. Now I won't. Edit 04/10/04 Wrong, there was an ill effect on my XP boxes-they had network and domain issues. Removing the update(s) via a restore point put all to rights. Caution is suggested.
