Cool winme - best of the best

Gents:

Isn't WinME the best of the best ?? Just finished installing WinME_4.9 on a Ga-7VT600-L/Barton2600 system. Absolutely no problemo. MKS slips right in, so I've got most *nix goodies too.

This last install has the following "pals":
1) K6-450/P5A-B (WinME SCSI drivers push an ISA Adaptec1542/Koolscan 10)
2) XP2100+/A7V333 ( toasts bread and roasts chicken ...)
3) P4@2.66/D845pesvl

What other OS provides such lusr_friendly features over such a broad range of hardware?

WinME was good when it came out.

But, XP Pro is the best today.

For the Windows OSes I have found the following to be the best:
2000 Advanced Server
2003 Enterprise Server

For the Professional based OSes-XP Pro is way better than 2000 Pro.

I do prefer ME over 98SE. It's the only OS that works for my kids games. XP Pro just never worked with those games. Please no, did you try the Comp. Wizard. Believe me, the kids games are lousy on XP Pro.

Angry XP is solid, yeah but ...

Sure, I believe XP_pro is solid, but the thought of Unkil Bill$$ DRM/RIAA/Hollyweird/SCOesque minions crawling up my butt gives me the creeps. I assert ( I do NOT request ) sovereign property rights over ALL hardware & software I use !)

And yes, I PAY for all my software including shareware-freeware ... with the exception of PROXO for which S. Lemon would never take a penny.

Gordon Bennett!
I go right back to the beginning when an IBM PC cost 5000GBP, came with a twin floppy, no graphics adapter and only 64Kb of memory.
And, what was worse, was that there was virtually no software for it!

In terms of Operating Systems I've used :-

PC-Dos 1.0
PC-Dos 2.0
MS-Dos 3.0; 3.1; 3.3; 5.?; 6.? (I'm sure there was a 4.? too)
Win 286
Win 3.1
Win 3.11 for Workgroups
Win95
Win98
Win98se
Xp Pro

I still have a soft spot for 98se. It's so lite and easy to use.
I'm getting used to XP now though!

I had been using Windows 98 for 5 years (gaming machine) and Windows ME for 3 years (my "serious work" machine). I recently upgraded to Windows 2000 on my serious work machine and I am currently upgrading to Windows XP Home on my gaming machine.

In my experience none of the DOS based OSs can even remotely compete with the NT based OSs in terms of long term stability, performance as well as hardware, memory and resource management.

I'm never going back to those older DOS based OSs and quite frankly I wish I had made the change sooner. Had I done so I would have spent a lot less time with my head buried in the computer tweaking and more time getting work done and having fun.

If I happen to have a game that won't run on the newer OSs, then that's tough luck for the game. I was fearful of upgrading my older OSs for fear of losing performance, when in actual fact the upgrades have improved performance dramatically on both machines.

I am going to pack up my older games and put them in garage sale this spring.

Sorry to burst your bubbles guys, but imho WinME was the worst load of _______ (put in any bad word you like) ever produced by micro$oft. I had problems with it from day 1. Anyone try a 'system restore' in WinME??? I never got that working.

I now have WinXP - it's a bliss....

I tried it once back in 2001 I didnt have it on my HDD for more than 2 days I kept getting constant lock ups in games that back then didnt have a problem with 98

The fact of the matter are that my kids games simply don't work very well in XP. Either I will get a game that is simply not going to work or a game that will work until it crashes. With some of the games I have to set the graphics manually to a miserable 640x480 with 256 colors. Considering that some of these games are still being sold on the shelf, I'm rather stuck using ME. However, please note that I have five computers-ME is only used and only for the kids on one computer. All the rest of the time on Windows OSes of 2000 Server or higher or Linux or Unix. I hardly understand the reasoning of bumping a game due to newer OSes. Then again, I can just imagine my poor kids-sorry NO games for you because XP Pro says no. Sorry, I don't think so.

The thing that really ticks me off is that XP RC1 and RC2 did play those games.

time to change ?

Hummm ...

Seems to be a pretty clear consensus FOR WinXP. I also have been thru the DOSx --> .... --> WinME sequence, with stops at IBM and SGI minis. For the Webwork that pays my bills, WinME has proven surprisingly robust, and it's VERY quick on modern hardware. With prudently-chosen software and user-practice it's also well defended from virus_attack.

I'm saying lots of stuff just works.

Given that, I do keep my eyes open. Two years ago I moved my business/IRS databases to a RedHat_8 system: plenty stable of course ... only to get orphaned. Prolly good for another 2 years anyway and *nix GUI/networking has -- for the casual lusr -- become perfectly functional in those last 2 years. Actually, if I didn't use purpose_written Win software I'd switch over completely to Linux.
Otherwise, I slaved new Ga-7VT600 / Barton2600 kit as the "testing" system ... figuring to look at the *nix v2.6 kernel, but I guess WinXP COULD go on one of the HDrives.

'Course THEN if WinXP does OKey I get a hassel from Unkil Bill$$ DRM swapping over the OS + proggies to my INTEL main production box. I can hear the howling black heliocopers, and jack_boot thugs slamming at my front door already ....

It's amasing that so many of you still use ME. I have heard nothing but bashes. I have installed ME for friends and myself and find it to do the job rather well. In fact, if Win98 SE hand system restore, it would have been the champ!
