| The post count shows something about a member's level of participation. Sure, some people have a lot of less technical posts, but they're still very much involved in the forums and help making this place special. I agree that a lot of people probably also use the post count to gauge the expertise of a member, but I also think that it will be very hard to have a high post count and still know nothing about computers Personally, I have a pretty good feeling of who knows what in these forums (at least among those posting regularly), but if I'm replying to a post made by a to me unknown member then I will use a mix of the post count, the interests and the job description to determine his/her level of expertise. Of course, this can't be entirely accurate, but it's better than just having to guess. Finally, if the post count can work as an incentive to participate more (beer thread or not) then I can't see the harm in having it. This place wouldn't be the same without the off-topic areas and if someone feels that those areas are a waste of time then nobody is forcing them to visit them. I don't even mind if people bump up the post counts by just agreeing to what has already been posted. It's good that someone posted a solution, but it's even better if someone else can validate that solution. Personally, I normally try to also contribute something new, though BTW, I think avatars as a reward for participation makes perfect sense. People want avatars because they're cool and by the time they approach 300 posts, they've usually picked up an addiction to this site PS: spookyload, you need to try harder in making your friend an active member. We need more guys explaining BSODs

| I think BSOD's are a practical joke by Bill Gates. Everytime a Windows user gets one, it sets of a light in his house and he giggles like a little girl. |

| My congratulations to whoever came up with the formula for the best site on the internet. Off topic & gaming --- Fun, personalities, and individualies show up here unrelated to computer technical "stuff". I think that's good and it develops that friendliness feeling that exists here. |

| Lots of good comments. Looks like I am very much in the minority here, but that's ok, I'm used to being the underdog. Just watch your "six". This is such a great forum, I have learned so much here and have avoided a lot of bad PC decisions by being here. For example: AMD processors (Always Melt Down). |

| But TaxMan, if you have managed to avoid the current AMD offerings how can you then know that they would have constituted a bad decision? ![]() I mean, look at pbeyer ... nothing but smiles on his face

| Oh, but StarTraveller, I took my advice from free spirits like keri. Look at miles, now THERE is a smile. Maybe you could wipe out MY post count, that should make me smile. |

| BUMP!!!! lets re-open this discussion again...I didn't even realize that this forum once changed its policy where only technical posts counted...this issue has become relevant again today...maybe CJ can look into this once again...

| I am all for leaving things as they are. This topic resurfaced at least once since this thread was created. At that time (I recall it was early 2003), post count was removed from the post (it used to show), the front page split the forum listings in two (technical and off-topic), and the avatar policy was changed from 100 posts to 100 posts and 90 days. Things have been relatively free of conflict since that time. |

| I can't count how many useful discussions I've had in OT forums. I don't think the wealth of knowledge here is merely limited to computers. I've gotten great advice about BBQing, grilling, HT systems, movies, Digital Cameras, art, photography, music, relationships (lol). pocket watches!, etc. Anything and everything. I think a member that contributes 500 posts in the VIA chipset forum is just as useful as someone who posts 500 times in the OT forums and elsewhere. Everyone knows something they can teach someone else. I mean, whether you count OT posts or not, King Termite's still gonna have like 50 MILLION posts! But would it really matter? We know how much help PCBruiser's contributed without the post count. I think it was smart to keep OT posts counted. |

| I personally don't see a reason to change the policy. Since we removed the post count from the user info shown with each post, the post count inflation problem has almost disappeared completely (and if a mod senses someone trying to spam to get an avatar, we jump in and spank). As far as OT vs. tech, I know I generally like tech posts better, but some like OT better. It's not really my place to say who should post where and if it should "count" or not. Working towards a user-configurable experience is a better goal, rather than wasting energy on bickering about it. (I prefer good suggestions above whining any day of the week.)

| I've had a pretty bad morning so I'm jump in this time and see who I can torque off. What really gets my dander up is the people who complain about the OT posts. It's really pretty simple. Just don't read them if you feel they aren't "tech". Stay out of the "Goodnight" thread (for example) if it offends you or you feel that it isn't technical. FYI there is quite a bit of quick tech answers in there. Just the other day a member provided me with a link that was very tech oriented and saved me from starting a new thread. Other's have complained when myself and another member post about hooking up to do a little online gamming in the Goodnight thread. Would people rather we start a new thread every time instead of a couple quick posts? I/we could if it would give you a nice warm fuzzy feeling! Personally I don't read anything about AMD as to me it's ALL off topic. You don't hear me complaining about the OT AMD threads do you? NO. All the pissing and moaning over post counts and on vs. off topic is IMO some of the most wasted electrons on the net and now I'm part of it. The fact that something so childish to complain over keeps getting brought up leads me to beleve that some people really need to GET A LIFE!
