How does the automatic thread subscription work?

It's always been "auto subscribe" to a thread for me. But, I made a change or two in the options and (I believe it was the E-mail notification option) no more automatic subscibe. Does one have to have e-mail notification marked "yes" to automatically be subscribed to a thread one posts to, or is there another way other than clicking on the subscribe button at the bottom every time?

The email notification needs to be set to "yes" if you want to receive notifications via email for threads you posted in and those you subscribed to. Here's the faq on it:

http://www.asusboards.com/forums/mis...&page=3#notify

The subscribed threads will still show up in your user control panel though and can be viewed from there when you log in. You can also unsubscribe from threads there if you wish.

Thank you pbeyer.

I see where it says: Email notification is also referred to as 'Thread Subscription'.

Is there a way to be subscribed so the thread will show in the userCP but there will be no e-mail notification?

Email notification could be disabled but you would have to view "subscribed threads" from your user control panel and of course you won't receive any email notifications at all. AKAIK there are only three ways to get subscribed to a thread... by posting a new thread, replying in one or by clicking the receive updates at the bottom of the thread.

There is no way to get email from some threads and not others unless you unsubscribe from a specific thread. Either in the body of the email you receive or in your user control panel.

Subscribing to forums works differently... you do not receive email notifications for forums you subscribe to. They are only displayed in the user control panel.

Thanks pbeyer.

What triggered this question was: I clicked 'no' to e-mail notification in my options. Then, I started a new thread, the "Anyone using an optical mouse for gaming?" thread. It did not show in my userCP until I turned e-mail notification back on and made another post to the thread.

I may not have been 100% correct then... maybe the email option has to be "on" for it to be "automatic" and the subscription list in the user control panel will show all the threads you participate in or request updates to. I've never disabled email notification myself.

I would then assume that when email notification is "off" that you must manually subscribe to threads to get them in listed in your user control panel. Maybe another mod knows how this feature works with email notification disabled...

I guess it'll take some experimenting to see what one can or cannot do.

I think the only effect of enabling email notifications in the CP is that the thread subscription option is automatically enabled when posting a post / new thread.

Whatever setting is chosen, you can individually change the option for each post.

I have not experimented with this too much, but I think ST is right.

Thank you StarTraveller for the information.

I was afraid of that. So one must have the 'yes' option for the e-mail notification in order to also have automatic thread subscription enabled.

Thanks.

Thanks CJ.

My objective is to be automatically subscribed to any thread I post to without receiving all the e-mails.

Not a bad idea for a mod to the software, though. I'll consider it, but I've got a few other things that get higher priority.
