jwhitemx15, I beg you: Please do flash to the CORRECT bios specifically developed for ASUS A7V133.

WHY ??? Because you are currently using the WRONG Bios intended for A7V (VIA KT133). Although they are both similar, but KT133A is better and has different features and speed. Also A7V and A7V133 has totally different revision, specs, chipsets, and capabilities.

Those bios are also different. They have different hardware ID & revision. Some features are the same, that's why you are lucky that your A7V133 is still running, although using bios for A7V.

So, flashing to the correct bios is your PRIORITY before attempting to fix other problems !!!

For sure,

You will never be sure that any problem you incurr during the setup is a result of the BIOS or something else until you have the proper BIOS running. Do flash it to the proper one before doing anything else.

All of the troubleshooting in the world isn't going to help until the correct bios is installed, but once you get the bios installed you can look at the table on page 29 and see that slot 3 is only shared with the AMR/Onboard sound if you don't have or you disable onboard sound and don't use the AMR slot then that's your only unshared slot, put the soundcard there...

Unhappy

Well guys, I think I've finally given up on this motherboard. Last night I took everyone's advice and did exactly what everyone said, but still didn't have any luck.

Here's what my evening last night consisted of...

First install with BIOS version 1007:

After flashing the BIOS, I took out all of my PCI cards, formatted the drive, and installed WinXP Pro. So far so good. I then put my SB LIVE 5.1 card in PCI slot 3. Once XP booted up, found the hardware, and installed the drivers... I got the same result as before! DA DA DA DA DA DA DA DA!!!!! Sound card doesn't work properly even with the correect WinXP driver installed.

I then formatted my drive and gave it another shot.

Second install after flashing BIOS version 1008_01B:

I left the SB card in PCI slot 3. This was the only card in the PC besides the video card. I installed XP and as soon as I went into XP, I had the exact same problem again!!

I don't know what else to do. After all of this, I yanked the power cord out of the back of the box and went to bed! Total aggrivation.

Thanks for all of your help, but it looks like I'm going with an Abit DDR board.

jwhitemx15,

assuming you have flashed to the correct bios for A7V133, I suspect that SBLive that has caused this problems.

You will get everything working good without installing that SBLive card, right? It's a well known problem for that SBLive card, get Santa Cruz

Of course, you are free to draw any conclusion you like, and purchase any manufacturers' products you like. But for others reading this, I question the blaming of ASUS for what is in reality a problem with a VIA chipset and WindowsXP. The only thing ASUS would appear to be accountable for, is the tech support (or lack thereof as you've described it). Have you tried contacting Microsoft and / or VIA about this problem? Ultimately the mobo manufacturers are dependant upon the chipset manufacturer to fix problems with their chipsets / drivers / BIOS.

Finally, try to view this experience in a positive light. I know you would have preferred it if everything had just work first try. But just think of how much you learned in trying to fix this problem. A lot more than your friends who just popped in the CD and clicked install I'll bet. Anyway, it's time for an upgrade to DDR. Why not just get the old board running on Windows 98 again and get another board. The VIA KT266A chipset is supposed to be very good, if you've not sworn off VIA chipsets too.

Copy that, dk. The most I've ever learned is when my systems have had problems, whether I was responsible for them or not.

I knew it, I knew there would be a plug for Santa Cruz in here somewhere!

FYI...

I did flash the correct BIOS. Either of the two I tried should have worked. Also, just for the record... I did try three different SB soundcards and every one of them did the exact same thing. A friend of mine uses the SB Live 5.1 with XP and his works great. Just not my luck I guess.

Anyway, this has been a very aggrivating experience, but none the less as you guys pointed out a learning one. I didn't know that much about VIA chipsets when I started this. Hell, ANYONE can throw a CD in the drive and install XP!

I'm going to install Win2000 Professional on this PC and start building a DDR Athalon XP with WinXP Pro.

Thanks for all of the help!

Could it be that maybe it's your vendors not handling your equipment properly? I have never had a bad ASUS product or even one that has went bad on me...

It is a shame that things didn't go your way. I have to ask though, did you install the software off the CD after installing the SB Live 5.1? Or, did you just plug it in and then boot up and find this problem?

Did you try reserving IRQ 5 for PCI Legacy devices in the BIOS?

You could also try reserving IRQ 5 for Slot 3 as well.

My friend has the SB Live 5.1 in the same board and doesn't have any issues with it. I will send him an e-mail and maybe he can tell me the settings he has set in the BIOS.

Hey deadkenny, right on the money. I wouldn't know half of what I now know if it wasn't for buggy hardware, and soft ware. But sometimes you do like the ole PC to run smooth!

I didn't reserve any IRQ's in the Bios. I did check to see what IRQ my sound card was using, it was using IRQ 9. At one time, I did have all of my PCI devices sharing IRQ 9. Is this OK?

A friend of mine told me they can all share IRQ 9 because that's what it's there for. True?

I'll try to set PCI slot 3 to use IRQ 5 in the BIOS. I was going to toy with these settings last night, but decided not to.

I'd really appreciate it if you couled check with your friend and see what he has done. Thanks.
