Large Threads

There are a number of threads on the forum which are VERY LARGE and tough to follow. And, have very old postings. Would it be worth considering closing down these threads (not deleteing them, of course) and replacing them with new ones to make them easier to use? Say at the first of the year?

I think they do that regularly if you go look at the archives...

Maybe some of the permanent 100+ page threads should become their own forums. I primarily participate in one such thread myself. I'd love to see it as a forum.

Adding forums for separate threads will likely never happen. We want to keep the number of forums down to make it easier for new (and older) members to post in the correct forum.

As for longer threads, splitting them up in several smaller threads doesn't accomplish anything, except maybe increasing the number of threads in total, since you'd still have to navigate x number of threads instead of just one (just as hard if there is an ongoing discussion). Using browser bookmarks for specific thread pages works well, since URLs are unique for each page of a thread.

You will notice at the upper left-hand side of a thread the hyperlink labelled: Friendly URL Link. Click on that and see if that helps you out a little.

The problem I have with large threads is when you are searching for information about some topic, the search feature always points to the beginning of the thread. I know most of the large threads are in OT and don't really have useful info but some do (like the water cooling thread). It'd be helpful if the search feature pointed to the correct page within the thread or if the thread was split up to limit the number of pages you have to read through.

You will also find a unique url for each post within a thread at the upper right corner of each post.

There is also a way to get to the middle of a large thread by changing the last digit or so in the url in the address of the page you are on as long as it is not the first or last page of the thread you start from.

You can list your search results by posts instead of threads. Then the link will point to the exact post .
