Text Size--SEE DISCLAIMER

DISCLAIMER:
TO CJ AND THE MODS: THIS IS NOT A RANT, A CRITICISM, A THREAT TO LEAVE, AN ASPERSION ON YOUR ANCESTRY, OR ANY OTHER TYPE OF INTENTIONALLY HOSTILE OR NEGATIVE FEEDBACK. I LOVE YOU ALL. I PLAN TO ADD ALL OF YOU TO MY WILL.

Given the tone of some posts and attitude of some posters who have complained about the new format, I thought it best to add the above disclaimer.

The only problem I have is with the text size in the posts, which is considerably smaller than it was before. The combination of screen resolution and my poor old tired eyes with their trifocals makes the small size difficult to read. The default post text size appears to be 1. If that was increased to 2, my eyes would be very appreciative and a great format would then be perfect. A default of three or four or more would, of course, be ridiculous.

I don't know if changing the default text size can be done without messing up other formatting options or creating other problems, and there may be other needs more urgent than this. Just my humble suggestion.

REPEAT DISCLAIMER:

I am looking at posts right now and the default size seems to be 2. Maybe there is a setting somewhere in the User CP?

grsamf,

Thanks for the disclaimers!! I have to admit, I'm a little puzzled, though. If anything, it seems to me the text on the posts is bigger than before. Would you do me a favor and send me, or post, a full size screen shot at whatever resolution you're running, so I can see your screen.

Thanks,
CJ

This is strange. I hope I can explain it so it makes sense. I will make some screen shots of this post and post them and maybe that will explain it better. I use IE and have the text view set at "Larger." Increasing IE's text size worked with the old format and I had assumed that it did with the new. What I have found out is that changing IE's text size has no effect on the text size of posts in the default format. If the poster has formatted text size, IE's text options will increase or decrease the size. Text in the default size remains the same.

This is text size 1.
This is text size 2.
This is text size 3.
This is text size 4.

Screen shots to follow. Maybe it is some tweak in IE that I need to find.

You are right, changing the text size in IE wont apply to default size of this forum.

Screen shots of different IE text sizes. The reason I thought the default was 1 is that in the IE Larger view the text I formatted as 1 is the same as the unformatted text. Looks like the problem may not be solvable in IE. Maybe I will try Firefox again. There was something about it I didn't care for, but I can't even remember what it was.

Actually, I prefer legalese to fine print.

grsamf,

I have looked at things, and it turns out it is a bug in IE. IE will not adjust the sizes of fonts set in CSS. However, FireFox will do this correctly. I will look into fixing it, but it may be difficult or near impossible. Here is the quote from vBulletin's site:

Quote:
It's a bug. IE will only change the sizes of fonts that are specified as "em" or "%". It will not change the fonts if they are specified using "px", "pt" or "in". The default VB3 skin uses "pt" to specify the font size, so if you want your IE users to be able to change their font sizes you need to change all those "pt" values to "em" or "%"
The problem is that it is very tough to get the various fonts to look good together using the "em" or "%" notation. I will see what I can do. However, in the meanwhile, if you need to make the fonts bigger, then I suggest FireFox.

Thanks for looking into it CJ. I am downloading Firefox as I type to see if it works with the text sizes.

And considering that this seems to be a problem with me and IE and not the forum, I am doubly glad I added the disclaimer.

Problem solved with Firefox. A new problem with my Logitech Cordless MX Duo and iTouch not working with Firefox. Found the solution and posted it in applications in case anyone else has the problem.

Thanks again, CJ, for your help.

Well I dont know how you figure that out, I mean IE is a pretty popular browser, so one mans bug may be anothers feature...

I reported this size issue in the "vBulletin 3.0 - things I dont like" thread, post #1, but I think that thread got hijacked with a lot of other more urgent complaints.

Edited by CJ: I'm tired of this BS. BS has been removed. Deal with it. It's an IE bug. Period.

The way I figure that:

1. I have chosen this monitor with this resolution which reduces text size compared to, say, 800x600.

2. I had chosen to use IE and as popular as it might be, a "feature" that limits the ability to vary text size and will not do so in a popular format is, I believe, a bug.

3. While not something I chose, my elderly vision was the main factor in the problem. I really don't expect anyone to be able to solve the problems inherent in trying to find a balance between a comfortable distance from the monitor and ease in seeing through trifocals.

The text size problem for me has been solved by a switch to Firefox, something I did in response to comments and suggestions by CJ and others. I included the "Disclaimer" in my original post in a light-hearted attempt to reach two goals. The first goal was to let CJ and the mods know that my comments were a plea for help and not a demand that they drop everything else and make it all right for me. The second goal was to discourage the all too frequent complaints by people who list their preferences (IE, no cookies, etc.) and then rant because some vB features don't work with those freely chosen preferences. Although the second goal apparently was not reached, I sincerely hope I was successful in my first goal.

Again, thanks for your efforts and suggestions, CJ. All is well here.
