IE8 & Java Plugins Hi, Does anyone know how to enable Java Plugins in Vista and IE8. It may be very simple, but it seems to be evading me. I'm attempting to stream live stock prices from advfn, but there site trouble shooter says my Java Plugins are not enabled. I've checked the Java site, which tells me I have the recommended Java installed, (Version 6 Update 14), but all the advice they give on enabling Java is either not applicable to Vista/IE8 or does not seem to work i.e. the 3 options given... 1. Enable Java through your Web browser Applies to: Platform(s): All Platforms Browser(s): All Browsers Java version(s): All JRE Versions SOLUTION Please follow these instructions to enable Java though your Web browser: Internet Explorer 4.x and Up 1. Click "Tools" --> "Internet Options" 2. Select the Advanced Tab, and scroll down to "Java (Sun)" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> [Java (Sun) not in the scroll down list] 3. Check the box next to the Java version 4. Next, select the Security Tab, and select the "Custom Level" button 5. Scroll down to "Scripting of Java applets" 6. Make sure the "Enable" radio button is checked. 7. Click OK to save your preference. 2. Enable Java through the "Java Plug-in Control Panel" Applies to: Platform(s): All Platforms Browser(s): Internet Explorer 5.5 , Internet Explorer 6.x >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> [I have IE8] Java version(s): 6.0 SOLUTION To see whether your browser is configured to use Java or not, first open Windows Control Panel. From the Start menu button, select Settings, then Control Panel to open the Control Panel. You should see Java Coffee Cup logo icon in the Control Panel. 1. Double-click the icon to open Java Control Panel. 2. In Java Control Panel, click the Advanced tab. 3. Click on + icon next to Default Java for browsers. 4. Make sure the box next to Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Mozilla is checked. 5. If it is not checked, click the checkbox to enable Java for your Web browser. 6. Click Apply. >>>>>>>>>>>>>> [However; Default Java for browsers in ticked next to Microsoft Internet Explorer, and greyed out] 3. Clearing my web browser cache Applies to: Platform(s): All Platforms Browser(s): All Browsers Java version(s): All JRE Versions Clearing your Web browser cache forces the browser to load the latest versions of Web pages and programs you visit. For Internet Explorer 4.x and Up 1. Click "Tools" from the Internet Explorer menubar 2. Click "Internet Options..." 3. Click the "General" Tab 4. Click the "Delete Files" button in the "Temporary Internet files" section 5. If you still have a problem, repeat the steps above and restart the computer. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> [completed all 5 steps, problem persists]

IE8 & Java Hi FELIX8406 I uninstalled java, downloaded and installed it again via the site given, restarted my computer, opened IE8, selected Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab, but no Java to select in the settings list. Am I doing something wrong? Testing my system on the Java site, it's still not working.

IE8 & Java I've got around the problem by downloading Firefox. I've never used any other browser except IE in the past, and though I thought this a desperate measure, I have to say Firefox seems very impressive to me. It loaded the chart streaming site with no problems, seems to be generally faster (though this may be because there are fewer add-ons), and just as easy to use, with the same level of functionality as IE8. I expect I'm preaching to the converted to many VistaBabble members. Chears.

IE8 & Java Firefox is giving me problems with some downloads. However, I seem to have solved the problem with Java and IE8 by resetting IE8 and cycling through all the add-ons, first disabling then enabling them. Came across info on a Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 forum site, though not exactly like my problem, (i.e. his problem was with ie7pro add-on); it gave enough info for me to work it out. Still I now have both browsers, a second bite of the apple.

Java Options Not Available in IE8/Vista I have had two clients suffer this same problem very recently. Needless to say, it required one of them to format/reinstalling Vista in the end. I just broke the news to the other user that currently a nuke and pave seems to be the only "solution" right now (I'm not even 100% that it worked, as I haven't had a chance to follow up with the users who ultimately reinstalled Vista). I have poured through forums and support documents to no avail, and not one solution presented worked. The first user to bring this problem to my attention spent hours with support for the program they use which has been rendered useless by this bug. She took it into the Geek Squad and they informed her that there was a "hole" in Windows and she would need to reinstall. Seems to be a prolific bug between IE8 and Java/virtual machine and even reverting back to IE7 doesn't solve the problem. Unfortunately, the Web-based software my two users rely on only works in IE, so FireFox isn't an option at this point for them. This sucks, I can see a lot more users coming to me with this problem in the future. When working on the 2nd user's computer today, I uninstalled all copies of Java 6 versions 2 - 15. All uninstalled with the exception of Java 6 v. 3, which gave me an error 1719 claiming that Windows Installer was corrupt, for whatever reason. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Once I reinstalled, Java "Completed Successfully", but there are still no Java options present for IE8.
