USB write-protected? No it's not!!!!! Hi , I'm running 32 bit Vista Home Premium SP1 on a 2.4GHz HP Desktop with 2 GB RAM and 1GB USB used as ReadyBoost. My problem is that I can't write to any of my USB memory sticks, doesn't matter what make or size e.g. Sony 2GB, PNY 1GB, Datatraveller 2GB etc.... I can read and access what's on the stick but I can't write to it - getting the message, "The disk is writ-protected, Remove the write protection or use another disk." The USB is not write protected though and it's driving me potty!!!!!!! Tried formatting the USB through dos prompt but same problem, it appears to be write protected! Please help.

Did you say you are using it as readyboost? I don't think you can write to it when it is in this state. crabby

No, I have 4 USB ports, am using one for ReadyBoost, the other ports are used in the normal way for the USB memory sticks, which I can see (and access) on my computer, but can't write to. The ReadyBoost USB is just stuck in the back of the tower for that purpose nothing else. What I'm trying to do is figure out why when I put another USB in another port, vista sees it as write-protected, on my XP laptop it works fine....

Ah! Sorry... I misunderstood. I think you can fix it by changing the 'StorageDevicePolicies' in regedit. In the start menu search for regedit and open it. In the registry tree navigate to HKLM->SYSTEM->CurrentControSet->Control->StorageDevicePolicies Then right click 'WriteProtect' and click modify Change the value to 0 and then click Ok You will probably have more than one 'ControlSet' because you use multiple USB drives, so where you went into 'CurrentControlSet' go into the other branches (eg 'ControlSet001' etc) and change the same value as above. Once they are all updated, reboot and try again. Let me know if this helps! crabby
