Virtual memory?

My kid's computer (XP) has started giving the message "Virtual memory too low - Windows will increase your virtual memory". What does this mean? Do I need to increase their RAM?

Virtual memory isn't related to RAM... It is an area of the hard drive where windows 'emulates' memory. You can increase it by right clicking 'My computer' -> Properties. Then under the 'Advanced' tab click 'Settings' under 'Performance'. You can then change the virtual memory.

I would try and figure out WHY all the VM is being used. It is usually because there are masses of background apps and even viruses/trojans. Also, if hard drive space is very low, this can ruin performance as well.

Sounds to me like the computer needs some TLC. Get rid of all the rubbish that's not being used to give it some room to breathe.

Crabby is correct, you should change the amount of virtual memory. XP is not efficient enough when it comes to virtual memory (VM). A good rule of thumb is to increase the amount of VM to at least twice the amount of RAM. E.G. if you have 1GB of RAM installed, then set both the minimum and maximum space of VM to at least 2GB, or a little more if the hard drive capacity is not an issue.
